In what has been one of the craziest weeks for international politics in recent memory — and it’s only Wednesday — Pakistan has emerged as a major global peacemaker after convincing the US and Iran to put down their guns and come to the negotiating table.

This comes after US President Donald Trump threatened a “civilisation will die” if Iran didn’t agree to US terms on Tuesday. Pakistani negotiators were hard at work as a back channel between the warring parties.

Then, less than an hour before the American deadline, Iran’s foreign minister announced an agreement had been reached to enact a two-week ceasefire and for both sides to meet in Islamabad on Friday.

Pakistanis, who woke up to the news, took to X to celebrate the country’s — really, the world’s — biggest diplomatic win in a while.

Some celebrated with poetry…

Others with memes.

Netizens were proud of what had been achieved and many were not planning to be modest about it either.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was hailed as a hero.

After his month-long phone marathon finally paid off, people wondered who would be calling his office next.

Of course, Pakistanis kept their neighbours in mind during the celebrations, with netizens — including comedian Ali Gul Pir —speculating on how India would react to the development.

Meanwhile in India, some people were willing to acknowledge Pakistan’s achievement, even if it came with a slight sense of disbelief.

Of course, no crisis is complete without Pakistanis unleashing our ultimate weapon: memes. Someone said we had main character energy, another recited a verse in honour of PM Shehbaz.

Of course someone had to point out that the Strait of Hormuz was opened before Karachi’s University Road.

The world is looking to Islamabad with bated breath to see what happens next and whether the ceasefire can be made permanent. In the meantime, Pakistanis are going to make the most of this moment.

Hard for me to believe, that now, there is even a remote possibility, but a possibility nonetheless, that this Panama Papers family member, could be nominated for the Noble Peace Prize and even win it! Trump never deserved one and to even nominate a professed genocider for this prize was an insult to our sensibilities. I wish Pakistan all the luck to shine and make the nation proud!! The world will forever be indebted to Pakistan.

I'm sure, there were people in the inner-circle, in the know, who had been tipped-off about the impending deal and extension of the deadline, who promptly placed their bets on certain Oil, Gold, Stock futures and options overnight, with the full knowledge that markets will react positively around the world when they opened, and no stand to rake in $ millions or Billions in windfall today! In every tragedy, there are some who see an opportunity

This time the bird of peace has flown from Pakistan to the West and has been garlanded, instead of being arrested in the East!
