Aima Baig questions timing of Badshah-Hania Aamir buzz amid Iran tragedy

Singer says it’s a 'time of mourning' as viral clip sparks cross-border chatter.

As tensions in the Middle East spiral following US strikes on Iran and the assasination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Pakistani singer Aima Baig has questioned the timing — and taste — of lighter celebrity news making the rounds online.

The comment came under a viral clip of Indian rapper Badshah speaking at a press conference at London’s O2 Arena, where he was asked about rumours surrounding Pakistani actor Hania Aamir’s alleged wedding. In the video, he wished her well and said he hoped they could collaborate “when India-Pakistan’s ties improve, and when people’s sentiments allow,” adding that nothing is more important than one’s country and the sentiments of its people.

The clip, predictably, did the rounds on social media — because what’s more irresistible than a cross-border maybe-collab wrapped in wedding speculation?

Baig, however, wasn’t amused.

Taking to the comment section of the video, she wrote, “Looking and experiencing what’s happening in this world right now — and a huge tragedy just happened,” referring to the recent US attacks on Iran, “May ALLAH grant him the highest of all RIP, but do you think this news was worth posting?”

She went on to say that while she respects the outlet’s content and normally refrains from commenting online, the current moment called for a pause. “It’s the time of mourning. And posting about what a rapper said about what who where… seems disrespectful. Apologies if I’m being too sensitive right now, but we all are really hurt and saddened by what has already happened and is happening. Post something that will serve a purpose — sorry to say, but this news definitely does not.”

If there was any doubt about where she stood, Baig doubled down on her Instagram stories.

“Yes, I posted this comment, but not just for any reposts or attention,” she clarified, sharing a screenshot of the comment she made. “But at least show some respect to what we are going through and what just happened, all the social media content and pages — respect, this ain’t just a joke. It’s serious and SAD. Please RESPECT and stop posting content that can wait till the mourning. And also don’t turn this into a jab at anyone, just fear God, please.”

Her remarks arrive at a particularly fraught time. The Middle East is on edge following escalating hostilities between the US, Iran and Israel, while closer to home, military tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan are on the rise.

As for Pakistan’s relations with India since May last year, cross-border collaborations — once cautiously celebrated — remain largely stalled, with public sentiment and official restrictions reinforcing an already brittle divide.

Badshah, for his part, acknowledged as much in his statement, making it clear that any potential project with Aamir would depend on improved bilateral ties and public mood. It was a diplomatic answer to a celebrity question, careful, patriotic, and intentionally non-controversial.

Baig’s issue, however, wasn’t with him or Aamir. Her frustration was aimed squarely at the ecosystem that can pivot from airstrikes to artist banter in the same scroll. Since algorithms don’t observe mourning periods and timelines flatten tragedy and trivia into identical tiles, her comment reads like a plea: read the room.
