Robert Duvall, the star of The Godfather and The Great Santini, passed away on Sunday at the age of 95.
The Oscar winner’s death was announced in a Facebook post by his wife, Luciana.
“Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort,” read a post on his official Facebook page.
“To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.”
Variety noted that Duvall bagged seven Oscar nominations during his career and also shone in TV series such as Lonesome Dove (1989) and Broken Trail (2006). He received five Emmy nominations and won twice. His first big-screen role was Boo Radley in the 1962 classic To Kill a Mockingbird.
One of his final acting credits was for The Pale Blue Eye in 2022 alongside Christian Bale.
Duvall was born in San Diego and grew up across the United States courtesy of his father’s position as a Navy rear admiral.
