Saba Qamar hits back at people criticising her for not wanting to move to Karachi — again

The latest bout was triggered by Juvaria Abbasi telling the star to respect the place she earns from.

When Saba Qamar said she wouldn’t ever move to Karachi back in October, she likely had no idea what kind of storm her comments would kick up. Yet here we are, almost three and a half months later with people continuing to insist that she shouldn’t have said what she did.

The latest critic is actor Juvaria Abbasi, who was on Ahmed Ali Butt’s podcast Excuse Me when Butt asked her if she was upset with Qamar for her comments.

“I am not upset at her, but one should respect the place they earn from. Karachi gave her fame, respect,” she replied.

When the host interjected to say Qamar loves Karachi, his guest said, “I didn’t like her expression about Karachi because we respect Lahore a lot. I love Lahore, I always go to Lahore, I’ve stayed in Lahore, worked in Lahore. We don’t go around saying ‘Astaghfirullah!’”

Abbasi said all cities were our own as Pakistanis and we can’t go around degrading them.

The 40-second clip appears to be what Qamar was reacting to when she put up a story on her Instagram on Tuesday, saying “‘Astaghfirullah’ means I seek forgiveness from Allah, something many people may not fully understand.”

In a follow-up story, she said, “Freedom of speech is a basic right.” The Muamma star wrote, “everyone deserves the comfort of expressing their thoughts openly” and lamented seeing people “hold back out of fear or restriction”.

She said she hoped to see a future where “every voice can be heard with respect and without fear”.

Earlier, Qamar faced backlash when she made the original remarks, with actor Javeria Saud saying, “The city is not dirty, people’s minds are dirty.”

Hina Khwaja Bayat, in a more tempered and reasonable response, equated the country to a house and its cities as different rooms. She said people must “think before [they] speak” and criticism should be constructive.

Leave her alone. Why she should move to Karachi? It’s her life and decision, nobody should dictate her ..

Without commenting on this topic, I would narrate a personal experience from my overseas stay. It was the statement of a visitor from Karachi, who had also visited Lahore on some business during the 90s. He said, " ....in Lahore, I saw smiles on the faces of people!!!" That was the bewildered statement of a Karachiit, almost in grudge against smiling Lahore in the backdrop of Karachi under the horrors of the then MQM rule in 90d.

"Karachi gave her fame, respect,” Karachi is also the only city in the country, where you have a higher chance of being robbed, assaulted or get shot in cold blood! If you are stuck in this miserable city, that is your choice. Unless someone has a loaded gun pointed at your head!?

How is it anyone's business where someone chooses to live or work? Too each his own.

lets call spade a spade and not have our feelers be hurt - Karachi is a Dump and the rulers have plundered it. It is not one party to blame - they are all to be blamed. Noon for being only PM for Lahore even though they were for the entire Pakistan. MQM for spewing hatred and divide and making the city unsafe with their violence and gangs. PPP for, ruling the province for years and making it inhabitable.

Karachi is a big brother of all Pakistanis and Mother and Father of all Pakistanis. Lahore-Peshawar-Quetta-Hyderabad and Rawalpindi and Azad Kashmir are cousins of Karachi.

The air pollution in Lahore can kill you. Unfit for human consumption It is one of the worst in the world. The air pollution in Karachi has not reached the unfit for human consumption level, yet.

A lot of people are missing the point. The outrage is not because she does not want to live in Karachi, but because of her use of the word “Astaghfirullah” when asked about it. People who are born and raised in Karachi have every right to feel offended if someone appears to insult their city, just as any Lahori, Islamabadi, or resident of any other city would. Yes, Karachi may not be the most pleasant place to live at the moment, but it remains the economic hub of the country, and millions move here in search of opportunities, that too is a reality. And freedom of speech does not mean freedom from criticism.

I totally resonate with Saba at not wanting to live in Karachi as a lifelong karachite myself, the city's infrastructure & maintenance has depleted too much, these actors & podcast hosts should leave her alone, they live in their own bubble & don't want to face the reality, they want everyone to observe status quo like them.

Zero marks for diplomacy, IQ, and tact!!! AAB, the compere should not ask such sensitive questions just to add oomph to his show. And someone, especially celebs shoud refrain from expressing comments like their dislike on social media in less sensitive ways.

It's easy to hold a grudge against xyz for her words, rather than work on the multitude of issues that Karachi (or city abc) faces. It's even easier to enjoy famous ppl commenting on each other's statements. Comfort-oriented culture needs to be replaced.
