The Legally Blonde prequel, Elle, is releasing on July 1 with a second season already in the works
Ace attorney Elle Woods is going back — not to court or to college, but to high school for Elle, the prequel to her hit 2001 comedy Legally Blonde.
Reese Witherspoon, who played Woods in the original film, announced in an Instagram post that the series would be releasing on July 1 on Amazon Prime.
The announcement video, which was shot as two sides of a video call between Witherspoon — who is working as an executive producer for the show — and the cast of Elle, also revealed the show had already been renewed for a second season by Amazon Prime.
In her caption, the star said there was “no better way to celebrate 25 years of Legally Blonde”. Lexi Minetree, who will be leading the show, could be seen in the video alongside an ensemble of cast members.
Along with Minetree, the cast of the series includes June Diane Raphael as Elle’s mother Eva and Tom Everett Scott as her father Wyatt, as well as Gabrielle Policano, Jacob Moskovitz, Chandler Kinney, and Zac Looker. We will obviously also be seeing a young baby Bruiser.
In a statement to Variety, Witherspoon said, “Twenty-five years after the world met Elle Woods for the first time, it’s a dream come true to share the story of how she became the unstoppable force we all fell in love with. Discovering Lexi Minetree and watching her step into Elle’s fabulous shoes has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my career. I think our series’ themes of kindness, authenticity, and believing in yourself will resonate deeply with fans of the original films and new audiences alike.”
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Minetree said the show takes place in 1995 and “it’s the origin story of how she got to be the woman that we see in the movie. That confident, strong, funny woman.”
When asked if viewers will find out how Woods’ iconic “Bend and Snap” move originated, the young actor said they’ll have to find out. She said the show had “such a fun script,” which captures the joy and humour of the original movie.
