‘They deserve to determine their own future’: Malala comes out in support of Iran’s women amidst unrest

The Nobel laureate said the protests can not be separated from restrictions placed on Iranian girls and women.

Nobel prize winner Malala Yousafzai has expressed her support for the women and girls of Iran after widespread protests against the country’s hardline regime continued for over two weeks.

The activist said the protests — which began over economic woes and the rapid devaluation of the Iranian Rial — “cannot be separated from the long-standing, state-imposed restrictions on girls’ and women’s autonomy, in all aspects of public life, including education.”

Iranian girls, she said, “demand a life with dignity”.

Yousafzai said the people of Iran had warned the world about the repression “at great personal risk” and that “their voices have been silenced for decades”. The restrictions placed on women, she wrote, exist within a larger system of “gendered control” with “segregation, surveillance, and punishment”.

The women of Iran, the activist said, “demand their voices be heard and the right to determine their political future”. That future, she asserted, must include “the leadership of Iranian women and girls” and “not external forces or oppressive regimes”.

Yousafzai ended her post by declaring, “I stand with the people and girls of Iran in their call for freedom and dignity. They deserve to determine their own future.”

The activist has spoken about Iran before, most recently in December when she echoed the Norwegian Nobel Committee in denouncing the arrest of fellow laureate Narges Mohammadi.

She also shared Amnesty International’s condemnation of the UK for arresting Greta Thunberg as the Swedish activist protested against Israeli actions in Gaza.

Yousafzai has taken an increasing interest in the Middle East in recent months, with her Malala Fund pledging $100,000 to help Palestinian refugees in September. The organisation has since promised another $300,000 for girls’ education and emergency relief in Gaza, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Malala is an opportunist at best. She will wrap herself in any flag that is convenient or relevant to promote herself and make herself look relevant. Though you would not find her with a Palestinian flag, Kafiyeh, or even a slogan condemning Israel's genocide over the past two years. Conveniently, she did not want to offend her Jewish supporters in Hollywood, or the UK. BTW, can we see Malala with a US flag, supporting the US citizens who are being gunned down by the fascist Trump regime and ICE agents??

Please get out of your luxurious western enclaves to visit Iran to see for yourself the so called ‘restrictions’ that you are talking about. The women are freer in that part of the world than the part of the world that you have adopted to live. Didn’t heard a word from you about the plight of Gaza women and children, who are dying every day since last two years on the ‘orders of your adopted masters. Is it not hypocritical??

She is not a person who can afford to comment on Iran when she does not speak up for women around the world

Somehow, Greta Thumberg has earned more of my respect than Malala. At least the Swedish activist gets involved in a cause - from global warming to Gaza Aid flotilas to Food Insecurity to protests against Genocide. She's neither afraid of the US nor the Israelis and is ever so humble. Unlike Malala, who glows under the limelight at Hollywood and designer gowns but never utter a word against Israel over the past two years, while people of Gaza were being butchered, starved and rendered homeless. Save you breath for the Oscars Malala.

An ICE Agent inside USA shot dead an American woman few days ago. Malala wont say a word for that woman. This is the reason why Pakistani criticize her agenda.

Malala speaks what is articulated by the western media thus confirming that this is pay back time. Did she speak against those who brazenly killed Palestinian women and children and which is now in its third year.

Dear Malala. Have you ever been to Iran or even read about the condition of Iran there? Women participation in University is higher then that of males. They are present in very single field of life and live a life if dignity and freedom. If in your eyes taking off the veil is freedom then that is another discussion. Puppet of the West much?
