Karachi’s TDF Ghar and MagnifiScience Centre declared museums by Sindh government
The Dawood Foundation (TDF) announced on Wednesday their flagship educational attractions in Karachi, the TDF MagnifiScience Centre and the TDF Ghar have been granted the status of museums by the Sindh government.
In a press release posted to the foundation’s Instagram account, TDF said, “This recognition celebrates their contribution to preserving heritage, inspiring curiosity and making culture and science accessible to all in Karachi.”
The foundation thanked the authorities for the honour and pledged to continue working towards “advancing public learning through culture, science and heritage”.
TDF Ghar, set up in a 1930s bungalow built along Karachi‘s MA Jinnah Road, is one of the city’s more prominent informal learning spaces. Furnished with artefacts from bygone eras — books, radios, knick-knacks and pictures of the Dawood family — it provides a spot for people to come together for events, study sessions and their frequent exhibitions on the city’s history.
If TDF Ghar is the past, the MagnifiScience Centre is the future. Billed as Pakistan’s first contemporary science centre, the multi-storey complex with a garden and gift shop is a temple of learning. Several interactive exhibits dealing with different aspects of science — nature, technology and the human body — aim to encourage a sense of curiosity and wonder in young visitors.
In December, an exhibition on Sindh’s history at the MagnifiScience Centre was inaugurated by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.
