Netizens can’t believe their eyes over portrayal of student-teacher ‘romance’ in Main Manto Nahi Hoon

A scene in Khalilur Rehman Qamar's latest drama sparked outrage online — again.
17 Oct, 2025

Khalilur Rehman Qamar is no stranger to controversy, being called out every so often for his misogynistic personal views and problematic writing. That’s why it’s not at all surprising that his latest drama, Main Manto Nahi Hoon, has landed in hot water for the second time in its two-and-a-half month run on television.

The last time we wrote a piece like this, netizens were dragging the drama for a disgraceful scene in the first episode where the show’s female lead, Mehmal (Sajal Ali), cracks a fat-shaming joke at the expense of her teacher Manto (Humayun Saeed) and his non-existent wife.

This time, the subject is more dangerous and something many observers were worried about when this drama first started airing: student-teacher relationships.

The spark that lit the fire was a post on X from lawyer Reema Omer criticising a scene from the drama in which Mehmal’s classmates boycott Manto’s lecture at university and demand he marry his student. Yes, you read that right.

A firestorm quickly started in the comment section, with netizens calling out Qamar on penning such a “disturbing and culturally tone deaf” script and asking what exactly he was fantasising about as he wrote it.

Users on X pointed out the absurdity of the plot, how the relationship between a teacher and their student is sacred and how they were shocked to see renowned actors like Aly and Saeed agree to act out these scenes.

Users emphasised the potential ramifications of such content on women and girls who want to pursue higher education.

One user added how other dramas airing alongside Main Manto Nahi Hoon were spreading awareness about social issues and sending messages that contribute to social progress. She asked why Qamar can’t take inspiration from other writers such as Shahzeb Khanzada who has written Case No 9 and bring some good into the world. She also questioned why senior actors agree to go along with such projects.

Others had the same questions — why did seasoned actors agree to play such harmful characters, why did producers approve these projects and why did established directors direct them? Actor Iffat Omar led the chorus in holding her colleagues from the entertainment industry to account.

Some people just couldn’t believe what was going on — neither the scene itself, nor the fact that people actually watched this stuff.

We don’t know what was going on in Qamar’s mind while writing this — nor do we want to know — but we especially don’t know why Aly and Saeed agreed to act in a drama that glorifies this kind of behaviour. The age difference between the main characters is massive and he is her teacher! Apart from how icky this all is, there is the very real threat that the portrayal of this relationship could result in many young women not being allowed to go to university.

Mr QRQ is something else. Has no sense of what’s appropriate. Needs psychiatric help.

My compliments to Reema Omer for her post here calling the Drama MMNH a ridiculous Drama, well said. What can be more ridiculous and disturbing than to see a 54 year old teacher having a 31 year old student romance on the T.V. screen.? This is totally a nonsensical Drama.

The list of notable teachers who married their students includes a variety of personalities, from Nobel Prize-winning economists to political figures. Here are some of the most notable names: Abhijit Banerjee: An economist who married his student Esther Duflo, with whom he won the Nobel Prize for Economics. John Coleman Darnell: A Yale University Egyptology professor who married his student, Colleen Darnell. Abigail Fillmore: The wife of Millard Fillmore, a future President of the United States. Walter Kerr: A playwright and actor who married his student, Jean Kerr. Mary Kay Letourneau: An American teacher who married her former student Vili Fualaau in 2005. Brigitte Macron: The wife of Emmanuel Macron, who became President of France in 2017. These examples highlight the intriguing dynamics of the student-teacher relationship and the potential for personal connections that go beyond the classroom. This must be happening in Pakistan too, but unfortunately, they are not that notable. جاں گنوا کر تری دلبری کا بھرم ہم جو تاریک راہوں میں مارے گئے

Best thing is not to watch this nonsense. The more we talk about this more attention they will get. TRP will increase. I am just surprised how did our top actors not read the script. A note to KRK. Bas ker dain yeh ghissai patai dialogue aur retirement ka ailan ker lain. Hamri next generation aap ki shuker guzar ho gi

The latest episode of MMNH has some more shocking and ridiculous scenes. In one scene the students of Manto stop him before he starts his lecture to encourage and tell him to stand firmly before Mehmal's father for getting his daughter's hand in marriage. It is quite ridiculous to see the Top Goonda of Lahore listen like a lamb to the comical utterings of Manto and Miss Maria in his haveli when they propose.

@Syed Hasni At least in two of the marriages you mentioned the student was a child. Do you know what consent is? And that children/minors can not consent? You omitted that Mary Kate Letourneau was married with kids when she pursued her 13 years old student. She was convicted of 2nd degree rape of a child and jailed. Her husband and she divorced and he got custody of their children. She would go on to marry her student later upon release, register as a sex offender. They have since separated and he said, the relationship wasn't healthy and he sees things more clearly now. Another marriage is currently in the news because the student was 14/15 and his teacher was about 40, and also married with kids. Technically it is classified as grooming. They are happily married now, yes but then? Understand consent. Understand children can not consent. Understand what grooming and statutory rape is. Understand the conflict of interest when serving as an educator or in any professional capacity (professional misconduct). In fact all Pakistanis should understand this. In Pakistan age of consent/marriage is 17 though the law is broken every day with child marriages/child brides. So lets not glorify or encourage this.

Mary Kay Letourneau only married her student after she completed her jail sentence for molesting him.

Teacher student relation aside, age differences should be the detriment. So long as both parties are of age of consent, there’s no harm. A case can also be made for the opposite scenario where the female professor is courting a male student half her age. That will surely result in hysterical outrage among misogynists like Mr. Qamar and his cohort.

There may be many valid critiques of the drama, but I don’t quite understand why the portrayal of a teacher–student relationship is seen as one of them. It’s a fictional story, after all. If every drama had to model ideal behavior, we’d lose the creative and reflective space that entertainment provides. And rather than expecting television to shape our moral values, perhaps we should focus on strengthening those foundations through education, family, and community engagement.

The power imbalance in a teacher-student relation is MASSIVE. So much potential for coercion. Those defending such relationships should read up on that. Educate yourself, guys.

Good. We are not in the 90s anymore. And attending college is not the only way to get your education. Most ppl study online anyways. In the US, college is least about education but about extra circulars, socializing, partying and networking.
