Couples around the world can now get married online in Abu Dhabi

The emirate's government has launched online marriage through a mobile app for both citizens and foreigners.

Couples from anywhere in the world can now get married using the Abu Dhabi government’s app without even setting foot in the emirate, the head of the project told AFP on Tuesday.

The idea of online marriage is still in its infancy, with Ukraine launching a service last year allowing couples separated by war to tie the knot using its government app.

The United Arab Emirates experimented with allowing online ceremonies for people living in the country during the Covid-19 pandemic. But the new version has a much wider aim, according to Mohamed Al Askar, who heads the Abu Dhabi government’s TAMM application.

“It’s open to everyone. Whoever wants to get married in Abu Dhabi, regardless of their nationality, can get the service online,” he told AFP during the Dubai-based technology fair Gitex.

“People can go online, they can do the whole transaction without the need to go to any physical place. We are among the first to do that.”

For 800 dirhams ($218), users can complete online forms, submit all the necessary documents, book someone to officiate and even organise a virtual ceremony in as little as 24 hours, he said. The service is available to Emirati citizens and foreign residents, but also to non-residents, who will need a lawyer or other representative in the country.

The UAE is the only Gulf country that allows non-religious marriages, although the right is reserved for foreigners. The marriage feature was added to the newest version of the TAMM application, which allows residents of the emirate to access more than 1,000 government services online.

Couldn't get more impersonal or least special! Why dress up, invite guests or have elaborate celebration, when instantly you're married, and if the next day, you feel differently, voila, a click away, with another app, you are divorced too?? And 800 AED?? What a novel scheme to rip off foreigners. In many US states, a country official will officiate and hand over a marriage certificate in person, for as little as $20.

What is the purpose? I mean Emiratis themselves will opt for a religious wedding for obvious reasons. So that leaves foreigners. Why would foreign residents want to get married in UAE? And why would foreign non-residents want to log on to an app, pay a fee $218 + cost for hiring a lawyer in the UAE to have a wedding, when they can do that for free or lesser cost on their own country seeing irreligious marriage is common in the most of the world? Seems very strange.

The world is changing rapidly, and we can truly say that now live in an era of technology. Many countries are adopting digital innovations to improve the lives of their citizens. The introduction of online apps by the UAE Govt is a commendable initiative that simplifies important life process. Countries like Pakistan should also consider similar measures, as rising difficulties in marriages often lead to frustration and depression in society

Online marriage for anyone anywhere in the world has been available from Utah, USA since 2021. Much cheaper too and no lawyers or representatives needed, just presence on a Zoom call. It’s a 100% legal US marriage license too, but not all countries recognise it yet. The Abu Dhabi online marriage will likely face similar issues.

Many of you are writing about divorce or immediate divorce. To my knowledge you cant get instant divorce whether you had an irreligious marriage or a religious marriage. Every faith has a process (islam has 3 talaqs with 1 months interval and iddat waiting period for women which you cant not bypass in any Muslim country). Civil or secular law also has restrictions such as mandatory separation period (during which the husband and wife can date other people), settlement/division of assets, child custody, before a judge will grant divorce. In conservative Catholic countries like Catholic ones divorce does not exist. So no you can not log on an app and get divorced. But you can probably apply for annulment, dissolution or divorce and follow the process for that. Dubais Sheikha Mahras INSTA divorce was just to show the marriage was over (reportedly her husband had breached their marriage contract, was cheating with "other companions" as she wrote, and she is THE privileged spoilt daughter of the ruler). In Islam women can not GIVE divorce. Before Internet apps desi Muslims did nikkah on the phone and one may only have seen a picture or not even that!
