It’s a love story, and baby, Taylor Swift said yes! But was soon-to-be Mrs Americana proposed to with the best, most thoughtful and exquisite ring ever? We’ll have to take a closer look to know.

Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement yesterday after two years of dating in a joint Instagram post captioned, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”

They shared several photos of the proposal, set in a garden under an arch covered in flowers, including a close-up of the engagement ring — a round, brilliant-cut, old mine diamond bezel-set in yellow gold, with an engraving on the side of the band, according to Vogue. Kelce worked with Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry to design the ring, per the publication.

Artifex Fine Jewelry sells luxury designs that retail for up to $33,600, such as their Deametra ring.

In keeping with her artistic hallmark, the yellow gold band of Swift’s ring featured detailed engravings that add to its old-world charm. This specific historic cut, featuring antique details, dates from the early 18th century to the late 19th century, reported Forbes.

Hand cut and characterised by their cushion-like shape, rounded corners, and chunky facets, old mine cut diamonds were especially popular in the 18th and 19th centuries and no two are alike.

According to fine jewellery company VRAI, “Old Mine Cut diamonds are square shaped with rounded corners and have 58 facets. However, no two Old Mine Cut diamonds are alike. You can recognise one by its small table, larger culet and high crown.”

Jewellery researcher and gemologists at Estate Diamond Jewelry, Benjamin Khordipour, told Brides that Swift “was proposed to with a stunning elongated antique cushion-cut diamond that is approximately eight carats, F colour, and VS1 clarity.”

While the exact price tag of Swift’s engagement ring hasn’t been revealed, it was likely hundreds of thousands of dollars or more. “We estimate the price of her ring to be $550,000,” Khordipour said.

“Taylor’s ring is very much in step with the desire for individuality and artistry in engagement rings,” Steph Mazuera, who founded her own namesake brand that creates made-to-order engagement rings, told ELLE.

Ann Grimmett, Jared Jewelers’ vice president of merchandising, told the outlet that it has “an heirloom look that is both romantic and dreamy. It’s traditional with a modern flair.”

Lauren Boc, founder and CEO of Hera Fine Jewelry, highlighted its distinct design: “Many celebrity engagement rings are just a huge diamond with a generic setting, but this design is really distinctive and doesn’t look like everyone else’s ring,” she said. “I love that Taylor’s ring has a prominent but not outrageously large diamond and a genuinely thoughtful and unique design.”

Boc added, “This looks like a very elongated, antique cushion-cut diamond… The cushion-cut diamond is definitely more elongated than the average. The antique cut and elongated ratio give the ring a really unique look and a lot of presence on her hand. I don’t think the diamond is a true antique based on the shape, but it does look like an antique or old mine-cut style, which means it has wider, chunkier facets than a modern brilliant cut cushion and a visible culet in the centre of the stone.”

Mazuera agreed it could be an elongated antique cushion-cut or old mine-cut, explaining, “Antique cut diamonds have fewer, larger facets than modern stones. They have less crushed-ice sparkle and return more reflective flashes of light. Antique cuts are super romantic; most true antique diamonds were cut by hand in workshops under candlelight hundreds of years ago.”

She shared a photo of an antique cut versus a modern cut diamond for reference:

The experts also weighed in on the estimate value of Swift’s ring. Grimmett estimated its size at seven to nine carats, while Boc believed it is “a roughly eight-carat elongated antique cushion-cut diamond,” adding, “Antique cushion cuts in this very elongated shape are rare, to the point that they’re quite difficult to price. I would estimate the value around $500,000.”

Grimmett put the ring’s value between $250,000 and $500,000. Angie Kennedy, Zales’ VP of product innovation and new business development, aimed much higher. “Taylor’s engagement ring looks like it could be a whopping 13-carat elongated cushion-cut diamond, a possible wink to her lucky number 13, and I’d guess it could be valued at $750,000 or more.”
