‘Your silence is complicity’: Mark Ruffalo demands Trump, Europe ‘do something’ after famine declared in Gaza
Actor Mark Ruffalo has once again spoken out for Palestine, this time in a fiery Instagram video following the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) officially declaring a famine in Gaza City and its surrounding areas.
A disturbing image is also being circulated online of alleged Israeli missiles marked with both Ruffalo and singer Billie Eilish’s names in an attempt to intimidate and target them for speaking up for Gaza.
Visibly angry and shouting into the camera, Ruffalo said in a video message on Instagram, “This is not a natural disaster. It’s not a drought. This is a man-made criminal act to kill civilian populations. And it’s being perpetrated by Israel and the IDF. They’ve got all the food in the world on one side of the border. And on the other side, they have nothing. Don’t let Gaza starve. SPEAK UP!”
Without mincing words, he called for the killing of children to stop, for a ceasefire, and for world leaders to act. “More than 80 per cent of the people who have died in this war are civilians. It’s insane. DO SOMETHING… President Trump, DO SOMETHING! Germany, DO SOMETHING! Europe, DO SOMETHING! UK, DO SOMETHING!”
In the caption, the Avengers star was just as blunt. “What we’re witnessing in Gaza is not just a tragedy, it is a crime against humanity. Forced starvation, a man-made famine, children and families wasting away while the world looks on in silence. This is not a natural disaster. This is the result of deliberate choices made by those in power. World leaders: your silence is complicity.”
He concluded his caption writing, “Raise your voices. Demand an end to this famine. Demand an end to the genocide and destruction. Demand accountability. Demand life.”
Ruffalo isn’t alone. Singer Eilish has also been consistently sharing posts about Gaza on her Instagram stories. Recently, she called Israel’s relocation plan for Palestinians “horrifying“. In several other stories, she has been amplifying on-the-ground voices in Gaza.
A disturbing image being circulated online by pages such as Artists for Palestine, Eye on Palestine, and Wear The Peace, shows Israeli missiles marked with both Eilish and Ruffalo’s names, highlighting how visible voices for Palestine are being targeted.
Previously, both Ruffalo and Eilish wore red Artists4Ceasefire pins at the Oscars.
The IPC — the international system for monitoring hunger — declared famine in Gaza Governorate, meaning more than half a million people are now experiencing starvation, destitution and death. The crisis is projected to spread to central and southern Gaza by the end of September, potentially affecting more than three-quarters of the population. Another 1.7 million people remain in “emergency” conditions.
The IPC has described the classification as “entirely man-made,” a result of Israel’s blockade on food, medicine and humanitarian supplies. Israel, predictably, has rejected the findings, dismissing them as “Hamas lies”.
