Horror-comedies are difficult to nail. Too much horror, and your audience will be too anxious to laugh; too much comedy, and your audience won’t take the scary bits seriously. HUM TV is looking to take on the challenge, though, with their new drama series Jinn Ki Shadi Unn Ki Shadi.

In the show’s first teaser, posted to Instagram on Sunday, we see Wahaj Ali and Sehar Khan in the lead roles of what appears to be a romcom between a man and a jinn. Ali, who plays the human half of the romance, is shown to be a poetry enthusiast living in a dated house. Khan is seen as a jinn, swooning over her human’s recitation.

The duo stars alongside Arslan Naseer, Romaisa Khan, Sidra Niazi, Laiba Butt, Syed Jibran, Irfan Motiwala, Nadia Afgan, Tamkenat Mansoor, Arbaaz Khan, Asif Khan, Nabeel Ahson and others in the series directed by Saife Hasan, whose last drama with HUM TVTan Man Neel o Neel — was hailed as a national conversation starter on vigilantism and false accusations of blasphemy. This latest project is written by Syed Nabeel and produced by Momina Duraid Productions.

Interestingly, this isn’t Ali’s first role as the human lead in a horror romcom. He previously played a similar role opposite Neelam Muneer in the 2017 drama serial Dilnawaz. Fans were quick to point out similarities between the premises of both shows in the teaser’s comment section.

We don’t have information on when the show will begin airing, but according to a post shared by the director, filming began almost three months ago. We’re equal parts excited and scared for how this might turn out — but for a horror comedy, that’s a good thing.

Good efforts, after the great Lehri, Moin Akhtar, Umar Sharif and many more in the past are no more alive today, we need more new talent in comedy to replaced above comedians.

Horror plus comedy? Is it not negative plus positive equal zero?

Is Pemra asleep? They let this pass? No outrage or complaint from audience? And this doesn't go against laws of nature, religious or cultural values and norms? I don't recall any Quranic islamic allowance for marriage between humans and paranormal entities like jinns. Now imagine this drama about a marriage between a Muslim woman and a Christian man. Yes, you can already hear the selective outrage, complaints and picture Pemras speedy censorship notice. But not for marriage between Jinn and human, apparently. Fooling an 95% ignorant nation is easy. This is why knowing and understanding religion is important to identify and counter jahil indoctrination.

This drama also proves that besides romance, love and shaadi there is no subject for drama creators. Human Pakistani girls must be so unappealing to these creators that the guy is willing to consider shape shifting jinns. Either that or the ratio of single girls has fallen extremely and unprecedented low. And apparently jinns have dropped their standards so low that they are willing to consider desi mummy's boys with the umbilical cord intact and dysfunctional joint family system.
