A collection of rare photographs of the Pakistan Movement have been mysteriously stolen from the Allama Iqbal Library in Rahim Yar Khan, Dawn has learnt.

The collection of around 150 photographs was on display at the library’s gallery and auditorium. The collection consisted of photographs of the leaders and martyrs of the Pakistan Movement. The collection has mysteriously disappeared from the library without a trace.

Former nazim Rana Iftikhar Rasool, while talking to Dawn on Tuesday, said the photographs were brought in 2006 with his personal efforts and the cooperation of the Pakistan Ideology Institute. He said the display was organised with the cooperation of the Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) at the library so that the younger generation could be made aware of the sacrifices during the Pakistan Movement.

Mr Rasool said that this theft was a serious violation of a national heritage and demanded immediate notice and a transparent inquiry from the authorities.

The public, social and political circles have expressed concern over the negligence in handling the precious collection and possible corruption. They are of the view if immediate action is not taken, a valuable part of the national identity would forever be lost.

When contacted, Municipal Committee (MC) Administrator Irfan Anwar, Chief Municipal Officer Rana Mahmood Ahmed and Allama Iqbal Library In-charge Muhammad Tariq did not respond to calls by this correspondent.

Without a trace? Its 2025. Digital age. No surveillance, no CCTV cameras, no digital log entries and ID card swiped or biometrics to enter a library having invaluable historical photographs? If I wanted to enter a university, I have to present my ID card and it's logged. Even if only for a visit, to look around and not as a student or staff member. In fact the guards keep your ID card and you get it when you leave. How about this? It was an inside job. The library or somebody there knows exactly what happened. Arrests should be made and detention until all photographs have been recovered. Don't play games. They didn't just disappear into thin air. Somebody went inside, spent time collecting them, packing them and then leaving the library with them. Police and authorities need to do their job for once.

Jinnah's 1947 recordings are also 'missing' from Radio Pakistan Archive. But All India Radio Archive have few speeches.

It is extremely likely that this was an inside job. That said, it is rather shameful that people who are meant to safeguard such heritage have completely lost their moral responsibility.

Apart from the Taliban and ISIS destroying historical sites, buildings, museums, temples and robbing ancient artifacts, we may well be the only nation robbing ourselves. It is not enough defacing historical sites with grafitti like back in 2020 in Gilgit Baltistan. We are literally losing history. Mandatory jailtime, public naming and shaming and restitution would deter future criminals. Add to that firing the insiders.

It is very sad news that someone stole our rare and rare pictures of our national heritage and we have no clue about it. Are we living in the 21st century and still living in the Stone Age? What is Dawn competency & authenticity in news that you have published the wrong place?

CM should order an immediate Inquiry and suspend the Library Incharge and bring culprits to book and recover the national heritage.
