HBO has cast Harry, Hermione and Ron for its Harry Potter TV series
Summoning all Harry Potter fans! HBO has revealed the young actors who will play the lead trio in its television adaptation of JK Rowling’s best-selling young adult book series.
Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout will portray Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, the BBC reported.
The three young actors stepping into the roles previously portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, the stars of the hugely successful films, are relatively new to the spotlight.
Scottish actor McLaughlin has acted in the upcoming Sky comedy Grow, and will also appear in the upcoming BBC action adventure series Gifted. Stanton played Matilda in Matilda: The Musical in the West End.
According to the BBC, an open casting call for the roles was announced last year, and more than 30,000 children auditioned.
Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer and director Mark Mylod stated, “The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen”.
Other cast members include John Lithgow as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.
More casting announcements are expected soon.
Rowling will serve as an executive producer on the show, which HBO said would be a “faithful adaptation” of the beloved book series.
The television series will span at least a decade and have more room to explore the book’s plot without the time constraints of the film, the BBC reported.
Filming is expected to begin in the summer at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden in the UK, and the first series could air as early as 2026 on HBO Max.
