Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy documentary on Diane von Fürstenberg nominated for Emmy award
Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s documentary Diane von Fürstenberg: Woman in Charge has been nominated for an Emmy award.
The documentary, released in June 2024 on Hulu, is based on the life of Diane von Fürstenberg, the influential fashion designer who popularised the women’s wrap dress. It is nominated in the Outstanding Business and Economic Documentary category.
Obaid-Chinoy, the two-time Academy award winning documentary filmmaker, shared the news on Instagram and said, “This was truly a labour of love — every single person involved, from the crew to our incredible executive team, poured their heart into telling the story of a woman who has always led with strength, vision, and purpose.
“Grateful beyond words to be heading to the Emmys with this phenomenal team!”
Earlier this year, Obaid-Chinoy was honoured with the Cinema for Peace Dove Award for Women’s Empowerment at the Cinema for Peace Gala 2025 for her film.
The recognition celebrated the documentary’s powerful portrayal of resilience, entrepreneurship and empowerment through the life of the legendary designer.
Obaid-Chinoy directed the documentary with Trish Dalton.
The film explored the life and career of von Fürstenberg, who managed to succeed in creating a multi-million-dollar fashion empire in a male-dominated industry. It used archival footage as well as intimate interviews, according to Variety.
Von Fürstenberg’s designs have been worn by a number of influential women, from Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton to Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna and Whitney Houston.
