‘One-way traffic’: Indian screenwriter Javed Akhtar on Pakistani artists working in India

Akhtar blamed Pakistan's establishment and system for the lack of Indian celebrities working in Pakistan.
Updated 01 May, 2025

Indian screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar has said that Pakistani artists working in India and Indians working in Pakistan has been “one-way traffic” because of Pakistan’s establishment.

Akhtar, while talking to a reporter from Indian news agency PTI, was asked if it was fair that the release of Fawad Khan’s upcoming Bollywood film Abir Gulaal was suffering because of one person. To this, the veteran writer said the first question was whether Pakistani actors should be allowed to work in India.

His comments come after the April 22 Pahalgam attack in India-occupied Kashmir that left 26 dead, in what authorities described as the worst attack on civilians in years. India blamed Pakistan for the attack, however, Islamabad has denied any involvement.

Following the incident and souring relations between the two countries, Khan’s Abir Gulaal will reportedly not be released in India, according to Indian media.

“There are two answers, both of them are equally logical,” Akhtar said, talking about cross-border collaborations.

He alleged that there was “one-way traffic” with Pakistani artists working in India. “Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan came to India, Mehdi Hasan came to India, Ghulam Ali came to India, Noor Jehan once visited India.”

He said these artists received great receptions and events. Talking about celebrated poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz, whom he called “a poet of the subcontinent” and not a “Pakistani poet”, Akhtar maintained that Faiz was treated like a state head and was given respect by the government.

However, he said, “I am afraid this has never been reciprocated. I have no complaint with the people of Pakistan. Big poets of Pakistan have written poems for Lata Mangeshkar. I’m quite convinced that in the 60s and 70s Lata Mangeshkar, hands down, was the most popular Indian in Pakistan.

“But why there was not a single performance of Lata Mangeshkar in Pakistan? We have received their artists with open arms but it was not reciprocated by [the] establishment.”

Akhtar reiterated that he wouldn’t complain to the people of Pakistan who loved and admired her but said there was a systemic blockage.

“The blockage was the system. Now, I don’t understand their system to that extent, and perhaps many don’t. Most of the Pakistanis also don’t, I suppose. This is one-way traffic,” he said, questioning how long this would continue.

Elaborating on his second and “equally valid” point, Akhtar questioned who they would please in Pakistan if they banned Pakistani artists.

“The army and the fundamentalists, this is what they want — a tall wall between India and Pakistan, so Pakistanis should not be able to see what kind of privileges and freedoms the average citizen of India enjoys. They want the distance because that suits them.

“This kind of bonhomie, that we are working with Pakistani artists, does not suit them at all because then they go back and then they tell about Indian society and they are so privileged and happy. It is not appreciated by the right-wing.”

Akhtar then questioned if banning Pakistani artists was helping and pleasing the right-wing. He maintained that both arguments were “equally valid”.

“If they are banned, particularly with what’s happened recently, after that it should not be a topic at the moment. There’s hardly any friendly feeling or any warmth because of what has happened. This is not even the time to think about it.”

The lyricist said that the matter could be considered at a better time if “hopefully after some years, sense will prevail and there will be a better attitude towards India from the establishment of Pakistan.”

“At the moment, this question cannot be asked. Not possible.”

What else he could have said. Muslims in India are now compelled to say anti Pakistan remarks to be alive. Such is the Indian aggression these days that sane voices like Ganguli and Javed Akhter have made obnoxious remarks without even realising how naieve they have been.

The “privileges” that these Indian Muslims enjoy in India is that they cannot buy a house in a good neighborhood or even get a good job. We are well aware of the privileges. Akhtar and his wife are paid sycophants and don’t represent 99% of Indian Muslims.

I have a lot of respect for Javed Akhtar but I am afraid he is being disingenuous here. True it's sad that Lata Mangeshkar never performed in Pakistan despite her popularity. But you cannot take one example and make a generalisation. Indian artists like Sonu Nigam (in 2004), Mika Singh (in 2014), Shilpa Rao (Coke Studio Pakistan, 2016) and Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu (both visited Pakistan together in 2012) have all performed in Pakistan.

Not agreed with respected Javed Akhtar’s views, Pakistan Establishment never involved or interfered in any such activities instead they welcomed visitors from India to Pakistan 24/7 through visa process at the border. Let’s be realistic and open minded, as both sides get closer to one another with open heart and mind like a family. My family moved to Pakistan in 1947 but I still consider India as my second home.

This person, who once sang the praises for Pakistan, is now trying to pin the blame for all the troubles India is facing on the former. Such snakes shouldn't even be taken seriously. To counter his point, India has worse freedom of speech record than most countries it criticises. Rather than pinning preposterous and absurd blames on Pakistan, India should do a reality check of itself and ask if it's the bully here.

Javed Akhtar’s comments highlight a complex and sensitive issue regarding the cultural exchange between India and Pakistan. The dynamics of artistic collaboration between the two countries have historically been influenced by political tensions, leading to a one-way flow where many Pakistani artists seek opportunities in India, while Indian artists face challenges working in Pakistan. The contributions of Pakistani artists in India, particularly in music, film, and television, have been significant. Artists like Atif Aslam, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, and others have garnered immense popularity and have contributed to the rich tapestry of Indian entertainment. However, the reverse scenario, where Indian artists can freely collaborate in Pakistan, is often hindered by political and diplomatic strains. This one-way traffic can be seen as a reflection of broader societal issues, including nationalism and censorship. It underscores the importance of fostering cultural diplomacy and dialogue, as art has the power to bridge divides and promote mutual understanding. Javed Akhtar's remarks serve as a reminder of the need for creative collaboration to transcend borders, emphasizing that art should be a unifying force rather than a source of division. Encouraging more reciprocal exchanges could lead to a richer cultural landscape for both nations and help build bridges in an otherwise tense relationship. As I say, From the rhythms of Bhangra to the beats of Qawwali, Our shared heritage dances, a bond that won't dally. In the colors of our festivals, the laughter we share, India and Pakistan, united in cultural flair.

Akhtar himself was invited to Pakistan. Assorted Indian artists have been hosted by Mian Yusuf Salahuddin to perform. Unfortunately, Indian Muslims are frightened to speak the truth. Crescendo of verbal attack on Pakistan has frightened Indians to speak out against it. No one has dared to ask for evidence of Pakistan's involvement.

Celebrities/ Actors shouldn't pick political sides in a conflict if they want to be admired and accepted across borders. That should be answer enough for Mr Akhtar why they don't get to work here. As a dare let Mr Akhtar suggest Fawad Khan say a few strong words in support of his country, while in India.

As India's population is about 7 times the population of Pakistan; it has a much bigger movie, music industry than Pakistan's. Hence, Pakistani artists like to work in India more than vice versa. Similar to how Canadian artists like to work in the US, it is a much larger market. Off the top of my head, examples of Indian artists visiting, or working in Pakistan are Nandita Das, Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah etc. Since the Modi regime has been in power, there have been a lot of aggressive behavior towards Pakistani artists.

It is all about finance not discriminating against Indian artists. Pakistani films generally do not make enough money to pay the hefty fees of Indian stars. India is a much bigger market and even failed Indian films manage to make more money than the moderately successful Pakistani movies and shows. So cool it Mr. Akhtar and stop your evil insinuations. The Indian producers also use Pakistani artist because they make money and not out of sheer goodwill or bonhomie

Root for Pakistan during cricket match and you will lynched or prosecuted. Does Javed Sahib remember massacres and rapes of Muslim women during Gujarat riots? And the massacre of Sikh community. If I occupy Javed Akhtar’s backyard and invite my friends to change the demographics of his house hold, would he love it? I have met highly educated Indian Muslims who by their own admission do not face any issues living in India. One of them rolled eyes at me when I suggested there was persecution of Muslims in India. India is home to nearly 200 million Muslims (close to our entire population in Pakistan) spread over different sects and come from all walks of life. But to claim that 200 million are being collectively socially marginalised, discriminated and segregated is an outlandish claim, at best. It's also worth noting that none of them seem to be interested in migrating to Pakistan.
