Counter terror police are assessing a video reported to be from a concert by Irish rap group Kneecap.

According to Sky News, the Metropolitan Police said it was made aware of the video, which has been referred to the counter terrorism internet referral unit for assessment and to determine whether any further police investigation may be required.

In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday by Danny Morris from the Jewish security charity Community Security Trust, the Irish hip hop trio appears to show one member of the group shout “up Hamas, up Hezbollah.”

Morris said the video was from a gig last November at London’s Kentish Town Forum.

Hamas and Hezbollah are both proscribed as terrorist groups in the UK under the Terrorism Act 2000.

Earlier, band member Mo Chara told Rolling Stone that Kneecap has spoken about Palestine “at every single gig since the band’s formation, long before October 2023, as the oppression and brutal occupation of Palestine has been ongoing for 77 years.”

“We believe we have an obligation to use our platform when we can to raise the issue of Palestine, and it was important for us to speak out at Coachella as the USA is the main funder and supplier of weapons to Israel as they commit genocide in Gaza,” Chara told Rolling Stone.

The group has also criticised Coachella’s official live stream for censoring their pro-Palestinian and anti-establishment messaging during their performance at the festival’s opening.

Irish band Kneecap being investigated by UK police for allegedly supporting Hamas and Hezbollah highlights the complex and sensitive nature of artistic expression in relation to political issues. Music often serves as a platform for artists to express their beliefs and opinions, but it can also lead to significant controversy, particularly when it intersects with geopolitical conflicts. Such situations raise important questions about freedom of expression, the responsibilities of artists, and the potential consequences of their messages. While artists have the right to express their views, it is equally essential to consider the impact those views may have, especially when they pertain to groups involved in violent conflicts. The police assessment underscores the need for careful consideration of the context in which such expressions occur, as well as the potential for public backlash and legal implications. It also reflects broader societal tensions regarding the interpretation of support for certain groups, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts that deeply affect many lives. Ultimately, this situation serves as a reminder of the power of music and art to provoke thought and discussion, while also highlighting the fine line artists walk between advocacy and controversy.
