Architect Yasmeen Lari turns down Israeli art award

The renowned architect said she had no choice but to refuse to accept the 2025 Wolf Prize.
13 Mar, 2025

Internationally renowned Pakistani architect and conservationist Yasmeen Lari has turned down the Wolf Prize (2025) in architecture because of Israeli atrocities in Gaza. The prize instituted in Israel in 1978 is given on an annual basis to scientists and artists for their outstanding accomplishments, and its objective is to promote ‘friendly relations among people’.

Talking to Dawn, Ms Lari said, “I had to do it. I had no choice. I had to. What can we do otherwise? Our hands are tied. We are sitting here… far, far away from them [people in the Middle East]. Therefore, I think one must tell where one stands.”

Ms Lari, who has been consistently doing excellent work in the field of architecture, is the first woman who registered herself as an architect in Pakistan. Apart from designing magnificent structures, her endeavours aimed at the well-being of the underprivileged has earned her recognition all around the world.

Main ghareebon ky liye kaam kerti hun [I work for the underprivileged],” said the architect, who a couple of years back helped construct thousands of low-cost one-room homes for those affected by the floods in Sindh.

Ms Lari has already been the recipient of some prestigious awards, including the 2023 Royal Gold Medal for Architecture given by the British monarch on the recommendation of the Royal Institute of British Architects. She also won the Jane Drew Prize in 2020.

Her contribution to conserving Karachi’s heritage is widely acknowledged as well. Her book The Dual City: Karachi During the Raj published by Oxford University Press in 1996 is a seminal work on Karachi’s colonial history, its architecture and its people.

She was one of the first conservationists to draw attention of history buffs and the authorities concerned to the remarkable historicity of the city by the sea.

It just shows the difference between pluralism and a population that looks as the world as believers and non believers. The lesson is for the institutions who keep making blunders offering awards to people who do not appreciate what they truly mean.

Turning down a prestigious international award meant to honor her work does nothing to help the people of Gaza. If anything, she has lost a platform where she could have raised awareness. True impact comes from engagement, not symbolic gestures.

You will be rewarded by the Greatest Authority ameen I wish to point out that Ahmed Parvez as a young artist while still in Pakistan was nominated for a prestigious French Award (I've forgotten the award title) He went to the ceremony hosted by the French ambassador He walked up to the dais formally thanked the Awarding Body But said I cannot accept this award . You are killing my Muslim brothers in Algeria And he put the medal down on the table and walked out Mabrook again Ms Lari for upholding Pak values

@Afzal Samad The world is silent? Did you just arrive on to this planet today? Did you just wake up from a coma? Or perhaps you live under a rock? Otherwise, how is it possible that you missed all the 24/7 news coverage of Palestine by world media and social media? The world has been VERY loud and vocal and regular protests, marches, sit-ins, college/university campus protests, in most countries from east to west, south to north. There are active and effective boycotts against Israeli products and companies going on in corporate, artistry, sports, academia, and grassroot level. Every single event, awards show mentions Palestine. A Palestinian documentary just won an Oscar. Mass collection of donations in the millions, if not billion, of dollars in just 18 months. Aid workers and volunteers have been working to provide food, clothing etc. Celebrities, politicians, renowned human rights/social/political activists, academia have been protesting, signing open letters against Israel, demanding justice and accountability. Case against Israel has been filed in the international court of war crimes who ruled in favor of Palestine. Not sure what else you want. This is the world speaking.
