Aurat March organisers seek public holiday on International Women’s Day

They called on the state to recognise gender-based violence as a national emergency.

Calling for gender-based violence to be declared a national emergency, organisers of the Women’s March on Thursday urged the government to declare International Women’s Day, marked on March 8, as a national public holiday.

At a press conference held at the National Press Club, social activists, including Dr Farzana Bari, Huda Burghari, Nishat Maryam, Zainab Jamil and Jiya Jaggi, presented a set of demands addressing human rights, social justice and environmental concerns.

They called on the state to recognise gender-based violence as a national emergency and adopt a zero-tolerance policy against all forms of patriarchal violence. They demanded the eradication of child marriages, strict enforcement of laws against violence and full implementation of the Transgender Rights Protection Act.

Additionally, they stressed the need for safeguarding the rights of religious minorities by providing them with equal opportunities in employment, education and healthcare. The organisers also urged immediate amendments to blasphemy laws to prevent their misuse and called for an end to the persecution of Christian, Hindu, Shia, and Ahmadi communities, ensuring their social, political and economic rights.

Criticising restrictions on their peaceful gatherings, the Women’s March organisers condemned the denial of their right to assembly and the constant threats and harassment they face. They expressed concerns over repeated obstacles in obtaining a no-objection certificate (NOC) for their events since 2020. They also rejected the proposal to relocate the march from the National Press Club to the Parade Ground, which is primarily used for military activities. They demanded that NOCs be issued for all current and future Women’s March activities without obstruction.

The organisers also strongly condemned the forced deportation of Afghan refugees, warning that such actions would lead to severe human rights violations. They urged the government to halt these deportations and instead implement policies that ensure the protection and legal status of Afghan refugees.

Furthermore, the government was urged to take immediate action against enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings targeting Baloch, Pashtun and Sindhi human rights activists, journalists and political dissenters.

They also highlighted the urgent need to address the environmental crisis and demanded an end to environmentally harmful projects like “Green Pakistan.”

They ended their press conference with the reiteration of their demands for gender justice, minority rights, and the freedom to assemble peacefully without state interference.

The organisers emphasised that Women’s March remained an independent, non-partisan and intersectional feminist movement committed to upholding fundamental rights and freedoms in Pakistan.

The Dawn news it self indicates the women body demands general human rights. There is nothing special for women in their agenda. Then why Aurat March?

Our divine religion Islam has insured and gifted all basic rights to women and blessed them with a very honourable and dignified position in society.i think if these women and our respected sisters and mothers are sincere in demand of rights for women they should demand the parliament of Pakistan yo implement Islamic teachings in this regard in letter and spirit.becoz no religion ,no Constitution can give them as such rights and honor.

@Mudassar Khawaja Because 8 th March has been designated the International/World Women's Day and because gender based violence by far targets females disproportionately more than males. So it is special for females.

What about serious crimes committed in connivance with women; honey-trap, murdering husband with the help of paramour etc

@Shaukat Ali So gender based violence against women taking place for decades predating Pakistans birth are not serious crimes? A nation goes out of its way to learn a new English word 'honeytrap' (and using it incorrectly) simply to justify the vulgar actions of national treasure misogynist idol, when he is caught visiting ghair-Mehram women in their private homes at 4 am. As for women murdering husbands that's a crime but you will find husbands murdering wives disproportionately higher in this country dangerous for women. Who knows maybe its the centuries of oppression, honor killings, acid attacks, child marriages, male pass for infidelity, forced marriages of physical/mental/sexual abuse, having honor of family males ties to their bodies (specifically their private parts), the fact that 90% of Pakistani females have experiences domestic violence in their lifetime, deprivation of access to education/ financial independence/inheritance/consent/divorce and other basic rights and liberties that finally turn some women into murderers. And no I am not saying it's ok. I have seen males ruined by women, even killed, so my sympathy lies with innocent males because no innocent soul deserves such a fate and I hate women who do that. But I have zero sympathy for males who bring this on to themselves (violent abusers, rapists, child abusers, lncestors etc). Sometimes to end the abuse somebody has to die. Especially in a country where justice denied daily. But the issue is that on the one day women can voice their concerns publicly, some males tell women they can't and do the usual whataboutery deflection. International Men's Day is on November 19. Why don't you raise your voice then? Make your placards and march? Women will join you too. Why do you instead wait for International Women's day?

Women marched thousands of years ago in Egypt for their rights and their efforts resulted in establishing the first ever University in the world. The purpose of that university was, to find the means to offset the then prevalent rule of "survival of the fittest". Today, the "Aurat March", appears to be the revival of the same Egyptian story !

@Abdul Hakam Indeed. Islam has also given men a certain status and authority with more rights than women but also more responsibilities. When men fail women this is the result. Our politicians, parliament, rulers, courts, law enforcement and society are corrupt to the core and they dont listen to any demands for rights. Also, why can men and women not jointly ask for those rights? Why did it take AM to create this "interest"? People don't like to give others their due rights as it means giving up power. The irony that the only country created in name of Islam has failed to give women their rights.
