The defending champions’ hopes of a strong start in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy were dashed as Pakistan failed to chase down New Zealand’s target of 321, falling short by 60 runs.

The green shirts were bundled out for 260 in their first match of the tournament at Karachi’s National Stadium, in what can only be described as a disappointing and underwhelming performance.

New Zealand’s dominant batting display was led by Will Young and Tom Latham, both of whom scored centuries. Glenn Phillips added some fireworks to the innings, smashing 61 runs off just 39 balls, further pushing Pakistan onto the back foot.

However, the story of Pakistan was far from inspiring. Babar Azam’s painfully slow knock became a topic of criticism. He took 81 balls to reach his 50 and added only 14 runs off his last 31 balls before being dismissed for 64 off 90 deliveries.

Ravichandran Ashwin, no stranger to pointing out the flaws in opponents, bluntly called Babar a “tortoise” after his sluggish knock. On X (formerly Twitter), Ashwin remarked, “Babar’s journey to 50 coupled with Salman Ali Agha’s batting has to be the best depiction of ‘The Tortoise and Rabbit story.’”

The root of Pakistan’s failure wasn’t just in individual performances but in a tactical breakdown. They ended up playing a staggering 152 dot balls in the innings. As the defeat sank in, reactions poured in from all corners.

‘Selfish Babar Azam’

Fans were quick to voice their frustration, with many lambasting Babar Azam’s leadership and batting. One irate fan took to social media to write, “Babar Azam played for New Zealand.” Others echoed similar sentiments.

‘Criminal outing’

“Successfully wasted two hours watching Pakistan’s batting only to end up with nothing but depression. It’s time to get back to the grind. I’m done with this fraud team, especially with Babar,” wrote one dejected fan.

Memes galore

Others took a more humorous route, with memes circulating that showed Babar’s face morphed onto Chahat Fateh Ali Khan with the caption, “Barbad Fateh Khan sb.”

During the match, some questioned whether Pakistan was playing an ODI or a test match.

There were also heartening reactions to Khushdil Shah, who made a smashing 69 runs in 49 balls.

During the match, tweeps also lauded Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf for their bowling. However, Pakistan failed to take as many wickets as needed to prevent New Zealand from giving a target over 300.

Pakistan’s loss has raised questions about accountability. Fans are asking who is to blame for this frustrating performance.

The match has left the Pakistani team with much to reflect upon, as they now look to a match against India on Sunday.
