Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have decided to part ways after nearly three decades of marriage. The news of the divorce was announced by their lawyer Vandana Shah on Tuesday.

The couple, who married in 1995, have three children together — son AR Ameen and daughters Khatija Rahman and Raheema Rahman.

Their joint statement said the two decided to part due to “significant emotional strain.” Despite their deep love for one another, the two acknowledged that the tensions in their relationship had created an “insurmountable gap” that neither could bridge.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), AR Rahman shared a deeply emotional note about the separation early Wednesday morning. “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end,” he wrote.

“Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again,” he added.

The note, accompanied by a bouquet emoji, ended with gratitude toward friends and fans for respecting their privacy during what he called a “fragile chapter.” He included the hashtag #ARRSairaaBreakup.

Banu also released a separate statement before issuing a joint message with Rahman. Both reiterated their request for privacy during this difficult time.

The couple’s children have also spoken out, asking for respect and discretion as the family navigates this challenging moment. Khatija Rahman took to her Instagram story to write: “I would greatly appreciate it if this matter could be treated with the utmost privacy and respect. Thank you for your consideration.”

Her brother, AR Ameen, echoed her sentiments, stating, “We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time.”
