The next Met Gala’s theme has been revealed! The biggest night in fashion honours and raises funds for the Costume Institute exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and its theme is in line with the exhibition itself.

The theme for 2025 is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”. According to Vogue, the exhibition draws inspiration from Monica L Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.

The publication detailed that the exhibit will feature garments, paintings, photographs, and more — all exploring the indelible style of Black men in the context of dandyism, from the 18th century through the present day.

The co-chairs for 2025 are actor Colman Domingo, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, and musicians A$AP Rocky and Pharrell Williams. Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, will resume her position as co-chair while basketball player LeBron James will serve as an honorary chair. Miller will also serve as a guest curator for the show, with Costume Institute Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton.

The Met Gala is held on the first Monday of May, marking the coming of spring. Next year, it will be held on May 5.

Vogue explained that the Met Gala is a charity event and fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and is held at the museum itself. “It has traditionally been timed to mark the opening of the department’s annual fashion exhibition. Year after year, the event raises eight-figure sums.”

Every year, the guest list is kept top secret, until the first Monday of May when some of the biggest celebrities and names in fashion grace the steps of the Met in custom curations according to the year’s theme and dress code.

2024’s iteration of the Gala was heavily critiqued by netizens because of the worsening situation in Gaza as Israel amped up its aggression. On the day of the Met Gala, Israel called on Palestinians to leave eastern Rafah, amid increasing global alarm about the consequences of an Israeli ground invasion of the city.

The day was also marked by pro-Palestine protesters in New York converging near the Met Gala in a rally against the ongoing war on Gaza. The protest led to several arrests.

The jarring juxtaposition of the two simultaneously occurring events felt dystopian — to say the least — and was reminiscent of The Hunger Games, as several X (formerly Twitter) users pointed out.
