In an exciting development, Sarmad Khoosat’s critically acclaimed film Kamli is set to make its UK television debut on Channel 4.

The news was announced by Khoosat on Facebook. “Very happy and truly humbled to announce that Kamli will have its UK television premiere and OTT release on the prestigious Channel 4 this September.”

Channel 4’s South Asian Film Season, starting September 8, will spotlight a diverse selection of contemporary South Asian cinema. Curated by Nasreen Kabir, a renowned expert in Indian cinema, the season will run through September and showcase eight films from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

This year’s lineup spans multiple genres — drama, thriller, documentary, and social realism — delving into complex themes such as class, racial, political, and gender divides.

Khoosat’s Kamli is set to be featured in the wee hours of September 10, at 1:45 am UK time. The film will also be available to stream on Channel 4’s website after its transmission.

Kamli is a psychological drama set in a rural village in Pakistan that weaves a compelling narrative around three female characters.

The film introduces Hina (Saba Qamar) as a young woman waiting for her husband’s return from abroad after eight years. As Hina’s hopes for remarriage grow, she encounters Amaltas (Hamza Khawaja), a wandering soul with whom she falls deeply in love.

The story also follows Zeenat (Nimra Bucha), an artist grappling with a failing marriage and alcoholism. Khoosat’s direction blurs the lines between reality and illusion, creating a unique and evocative cinematic experience.

Last year, Khoosat bagged the Best Director Award for Kamli at the DC South Asian Film Festival. Kamli also won two awards at the Listapad festival, the largest film festival in Belarus. Prior to this, Sania Saeed picked up the Best Actress Award for her stellar performance in the film at the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival (MISAFF) held in Mississauga.

The South Asian Film Season promises to offer a rich tapestry of narratives and cinematic styles, with Kamli exploring themes of longing, despair, and redemption against the backdrop of Pakistani village life.

Other films to be premiered on Channel 4 as a part of the South Asian Film Season include Joram, Bhagwan Bharose, Barir Naam Shahana (A House Named Shahana), The World Is Family, Something Like An Autobiography, Kottukaali (The Adamant Girl), and Paradise.
