Danish police detained activist Greta Thunberg at a Copenhagen protest against the situation in Gaza and Israel’s occupation of the West Bank on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the organisers of the demonstration said.

Thunberg was later released from detention, according to Danish media reports, and the daily Ekstra Bladet showed video footage of her walking out of a police station.

Six people had been detained at Copenhagen University after about 20 people blocked the entrance to a building and three entered, a police spokesperson said without commenting on individual detainees.

Widely known for her campaign to end man-made climate change, Swedish-born Thunberg has increasingly taken up the Palestinian cause and said in May such protests “should be everywhere”.

A video posted by Students Against the Occupation, a pro-Palestinian student group, showed uniformed police officers leading Thunberg and other detainees into a police van while handcuffed or with their hands tied behind their backs.

Thunberg wore a scarf around her shoulders imprinted with the traditional Palestinian keffiyeh pattern, a common symbol among pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

The Copenhagen University may take disciplinary action against enrolled students who took part in the protest, Kristian Cedervall Lauta, prorector of education at the university said in an email. Thunberg is not a student at the university.

Brave principled girl. Greta is an absolute star. Even in Pakistan you get into trouble for protesting against the passive attitude of govt towards Palestine . The Western govts supporting Israel are the major polluters in the world. US sponsored wars cause the biggest pollution.

What are Pakistani leaders, Leaders of Muslim countries, Pakistani Publich and Pakistani students are doing? They are only criticising "western" countries. Please raise your bottoms and do something useful for our muslim brothers in Gaza, instead of finding refuge in just showing fingers at others. The bitter fact is: "Western" countries may be pushing their interests. We don`t even try to understand our middle-term and long-term interests.

When will Pakistanis in Pakistani block entrance to parliament ministries, courts to take a stand for the issues plaguing our nation like minority rights, corruption, womens safety and rights, lack of enforcement of law, harassment, intimidation, artificial inflation, lack of carrying out death sentences, lack of safety for citizens and tourists? Imagine how much we could change when we united in numbers of lakhs block entrances and demand action, don't back down, and don't expect other to solve our issues and criticise those who do. Greta has more integrity on her pinky than the entire Pak awam.
