Citizen-run free public library Kitab Ghar to open its doors in Karachi

The library is currently seeking patrons and book donations ahead of its winter 2024 launch.

Kitab Ghar, a citizen-run free public library in Lahore, is making its way to Karachi this winter. The news was announced on Instagram, much to the delight of Karachiites.

Lahore’s Kitab Ghar was started in Ichhra 2021 by a group of eight friends. The library operates on donations — both of the financial and book variety.

Kitab Ghar hosts open mic nights, film screenings, poetry recitations and talks. Their most recent event was an open mic night with the theme of flight where they invited patrons to share their poems, thoughts, stories, or perform something.

Karachi’s Kitab Ghar is set to open in winter 2024, according to the poster shared on Instagram. “This library, like its counterpart in Lahore, belongs to the city. It is an idea that comes to life thanks to the people who become one with it — aam shehrion ki shamooliat se, hum ek aisa idara kharra karte hain jo khud mukhtari se chalne ka shauq rakhta hai aur progressive taaleem o tarbiat o tehzeeb ki awaaz buland karta hai [with the inclusion of the public, we will create an institution that will operate independently and will strengthen voices of progressive education, training and discipline].”

The library is being described as an open-source project and is currently seeking patronage as well as donations of books in Urdu, English, Sindhi and Balochi. It will be open seven days a week, from 11am to 8pm.

Extinction of Libraries is not acceptable particularly for the old folk If current generation is instrumental in regards of literature this is good sign ... "Always transfer good books those who value it " Couple of years ago , I have handed some valuable juniors books (related to my kids) in some nearby school ,admin happily accepted and placed in book section

This is a very encouraging initiative by the Karachi-walas for the Karachi-walas and an excellent opportunity to create interest of book reading in people of all ages. It can also serve the appetite of book-lovers who can not afford to purchase costly books.

Great idea, let’s bring back in Pakistan old library system in all big cities run by municipal governments of each cities funded by provincial and federal government. The awareness of reading books by our young citizens in libraries will bring positive impacts in our youth. Today in well developed countries, libraries making positive impact on youth, why not Pakistani government think about it’s impact to our children’s…?

This is a wonderful news. I am a prose writer and poet. I have some books (quite old) both in English and Urdu that I wish to donate. books are mostly by Manto, Krishn Chundar, Asmat Chughtai and others. English books are mostly classical. Problem is that I live in Canada. Is there any way o send these books Karachi. Unfortunately, I am a retired person and do not have extra money to ship these books to Karachi.
