Internationally acclaimed Pakistani film Joyland by Saim Sadiq has been one of the most talked about big screen projects but with the announcement for its release in Pakistan came the demand for an official teaser. Now the filmmaker and Khoosat Films have shared a short teaser and safe to say it has a lot to offer, from Ali Junejo and Alina Khan’s intense eye contact to Sarwat Gilani’s piercing gaze.
On Wednesday, the video clip was shared through the production company’s official Instagram handle that described the film as an “exciting and emotional world of Joyland that delves deep into the challenging complexities of desire and patriarchy, through the story of the Rana family.”
The trailer opens to Khan’s cardboard cutout, Junejo looking the other way and Rasti Farooq running around with Gilani looking straight into the camera. The trailer then features a birthday scene with the lead actors happy one minute and Khan in a hospital aisle with dried blood on her clothes in the next. The trailer then cuts to a poster being changed at the low-scale dance theatre where Khan and Junejo work together.
In September, Sadiq took to Instagram and had announced that the film that bagged Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival will be releasing in Pakistan and revealed a brand new poster for Joyland. Recently, Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai’s inclusion in the team as an executive producer was also announced.
Joyland will screen at theatres across Pakistan on November 18.
