Former American boxer Mike Tyson slams streaming platform Hulu for stealing his life story
After making headlines for a violent episode on a plane earlier this year, former American boxer Mike Tyson is in the news for another reason. This time, he’s going after streaming platform Hulu, accusing them of stealing his life story which will soon be seen in the limited series Mike.
The controversial boxing champion took to Instagram to reveal whether he had consented to the production of Mike, an eight-episode mini series based on his life.
“Don’t let Hulu fool you,” Tyson wrote in a statement shared on Instagram. “I don’t support their story about my life. It’s not 1822. It’s 2022. They stole my life story and didn’t pay me. To Hulu executives I’m just a n****r they can sell on the auction block,” read the text he posted.
In addition to his post, the boxer wrote, “Hulu is the streaming version of the slave master,” while repeating that his story had been stolen and he was not paid for it.
Two days before his post, Tyson had shared another statement saying, “Hulu tried to desperately pay my brother Dana White millions without offering me a dollar to promote their slave master take over story about my life. He turned it down because he honors friendship and treating people with dignity. I’ll never forget what he did for me just like I’ll never forget what Hulu stole from me.”
The series is being created by Steven Rogers and Karin Gist. It stars Moonlight’s Trevante Rhodes as the boxing champion. According to Entertainment Weekly, the show’s synopsis reads, “from being a beloved global athlete to a pariah and back again.” The show will also highlight his marriage to Hollywood star Robin Givens, played by Laura Harrier, who accused Tyson of domestic violence.
Tyson condemned the adaptation when it was announced earlier this year. He had called it tone deaf of the “cultural misappropriation” of his life, according to the publication.
Tyson told Entertainment Tonight via a rep, “Hulu nor any of their supercilious team ever tried to engage in any negotiations with this Black man. They say this story is an exploration of a Black man. It’s more like an exploitation of a Black man. Hulu thinks their tracks are covered by hiring Black sacrificial lambs to play the part as front men for their backdoor robbery. I will always remember this blatant disregard of my dignity.”
Mike will debut on Hulu on August 25.
