Fahad Mustafa vs BTS ARMY: Actor draws online ire for criticising his daughter's love of the K-pop band

The actor said his daughter speaks Korean instead of Sindhi and he isn't that happy about it.
20 Jun, 2022

The stars of upcoming film Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad, Fahad Mustafa and Mahira Khan, have been on a journey to promote their new film but during a recent interview, Mustafa had people talking for all the wrong reasons. He spoke about his daughter Fatima being an ARMY — one of the unfailingly loyal fans of K-pop supergroup BTS — and how he doesn't really like it very much. That didn't go down well online.

On Friday, the stars appeared on Gup Shup with Fuchsia where they talked about the film and their experience overall. While their acting will be put to test soon in cinemas on Eid, Mustafa revealed that his daughter, Fatima, "doesn't really care [about him] anymore because she's 11 now" but his son is currently trying things out around Mustafa to get his attention. "He tries a lot and sometimes over-loves because I'm close to my daughter and now him. So regardless, he follows me without a purpose. Fatima, she's a BTS fan so she doesn't care."

Upon being asked if he has ever heard the K-pop sensation's music, Mustafa replied with a straight up "no, hell no" to which the host asked why. He said it's his "choice". The host said that if his daughter is listening to BTS, then so should he, to which the Load Wedding actor said he doesn't even know his daughter's favourite song by the band. "I called them Behind The Scenes band and she responded with 'no papa!' It's...I don't know Bangtan So tol something, I don't know. She speaks Korean, she doesn't speak Sindhi, what is wrong with these people?"

He wants her to speak her mother tongue instead. Khan added to the conversation and said that it's a "big thing", especially K-dramas, which she hasn't seen.

Their remarks irked many fans of the band who took to Twitter on a mission to call Mustafa out. One user suggested that the actor must research about K-pop and why "everyone is so in love with their content".

Another said he should "at least respect" his daughter and her choices. "Making her feel guilty and inferior in front of the whole media and making fun of her choices is just so ridiculous," they wrote.

Another wrote that Mustafa was "the last" person they imagined BTS fans would "cancel".

For one user, it boiled down to respect. "Who are you to disrespect other languages and every individual has the right to whom they like or dislike," they wrote.

Another availed the opportunity and shared a meme.

One user took a dig at the actor for making shows about false accusations instead of thinking what about Korean pop culture is so appealing and why it attracted his child to the extent that she's learning a new language.

Some users called him "ignorant".

Others were praying for him.

BTS has made quite the name for itself with hit singles such as 'Butter', 'Permission To Dance', 'Boy With Luv', and many more. The group recently announced that they are taking a break to focus on their solo careers.

Prior to their announcement, the seven-member group released their new album Proof, an anthology album featuring 45 songs. According to Billboard, their album has scored the No. 1 spot at Billboard 200 chart.

Fahad is on point, most K-pop bands are just downgrade copy of Backstreet Boys, thing is new generation don't know the charm of 90's, so they simply cashing it by copying that time style and contents.

The best way to get closer to children is to try to get to know their tastes, to know what makes them happy outside the family circle. Criticism made by the simple fact that they like something we don't know, and often we don't even bother to understand the reason for their interest, only makes them distance themselves even more. I believe that a change in your attitude towards your daughter would be a good start. After all, the adult is he not her.

What art or expertise is there in these semi-organised noise called K-pop? Do they have any equal with such real experts in music like Tansen's Raag Mulhar or vocals like Nusrat Fateh? Even Master Madan, the 12 years old prodigy, is still a milestone in classical singing.

This is the bubble Pakistanis live in. “Our coke studio is better”, “our music is better” etc etc. No, a big no. You have no idea how vast Indian music is. From Carnatic to Hindustani.

You must realize that the world is enthusiastic about BTS for a reason. Maybe his daughter finds peace, acceptance and positivity in their music because of which she wants to learn a new language. If media personalities try to learn from the Korean media industry and create content which is interesting, perhaps our children will be more eager to learn local languages and also put us on the Global map! Something to ponder...

I don't know what's a point here ?! If he's daughter listens to something new which is thousand times better than what our industry is producing is good ... He should respect his daughter choice and he just can't make conclusion out of it that his daughter doesn't care about him anymore. Sick man,

Kpop is not a genre, its a concept. Its a commercial machine, make money, get out, someone else then fills the spot & along the way, few will commit suicide due to various reasons. its a fact. My Korean friends laugh over most songs cause lyrics have no structure at all.

Just goes to show that todays young generation has absolutely zero respect for elders. Not understanding cross generational music is not a huge thing.Todays kids listen to K-pop which is still pop music and understandable, when I was growing up rock, hip hop and gangsta rap were the IN genres. My elders never understood that music and it was totally fine I never expected them to.The reaction against Mustafa (who really didnt say anything at all apart from the fact that he would like his daughter to know her mother tongue before learning anything else which is not just totally understandable but also appreciable) shows we have become absolutely intolerant as a group. The young generation has a mindset that anyone who doesnt agree with you needs to be bashed and shamed.Such a pity.

but not everyone might be like this I listen to my parents choices and so do they to mine and we never argued on that.... generation gap between us can create conflicts but we all must learn to adapt to that ,we should always remember our culture traditions and values first and then go to learning new languages if we please it's not wrong I'm a huge fan of music overall and listen to early 90s and trending both kinds of Pakistan indian English and even listen to k_ pop but that never urged me or my parents to argue on this I'm like it's okay if u dint line them or if anyone else also doesn't but disrespecting his daughter's choices was wrong he should've at least said that I wouldn't listen to them with the same enthusiasm as she does but I would like her to speak her language and learn it first before any new language rather than saying what's wrong with her and I would never listen to them ever only that's was a bit off he's his father and he should also respect her choices she an 11 year old and doesn't understand much about the world and she must be taught that it's okay to love BTS but loving ur country's music culture values and traditions is always always first So we should just let this go and stop being so negative on everything and learn that either sides have to respect despite of generation gap ✨

At least, artist should show some respect towards other artists. This is pathetic , they way we all show hate towards people (internationally) , there is a difference between dislike and hate. This and when yasir said absurd things during the ertugul era , like SERIOUSLY??? People do collabs/projects together to show their diversity/acceptence/respect towards other cultures! Yahan pe logoun ki insecurity he nhi khatam hoti !

I think every one have to respect others he is not bounded to like them but he has to respect his daughter choice. If his daughter follow them so it's her own choice but the Fahad Mustafa remarks was too bad he had no right to talk about anyone. He is saying all these things without even knowing about them he even don't know about their content their message but only just like typical people he passed his comments about them . In. My opinion what he did was wrong.
