Pakistani restaurant Ravi in Dubai teams up with Adidas for a sneaker collaboration

The shoes feature the restaurant's signature white and green colours, the year it was founded and six of their well-known dishes.
Updated 16 Jun, 2022

Never in our wildest dreams did we think that one of the most well-known international sports brands in the world would introduce something specially for the Pakistani community but Adidas surprised us by announcing a collaboration with Dubai-based Pakistani restaurant Ravi for a pair of limited-edition Superstar sneakers.

The bright green accent on the brand's classic Superstar trainers have been customised for the special edition shoes that are being called Superstar Ravi. The colour on the sneakers' accent reflects the theme of the restaurant seen at all three branches in Dubai.

The green stripes on a cream base references the heritage of the owners, according to the Khaleej Times. The pair also features a custom sock liner with a hand-drawn map signifying the meaning of the name Ravi, named after the Ravi River.

The heel tab of the shoe also includes the year in which the restaurant opened. One shoe has the name and the year written in English while the other is in Arabic.

According to the publication, the restaurant was opened in 1978 by Chaudary Abdul Hameed. The restaurant has served as a hub for local families, friends where they come together to enjoy food like home.

Now the culinary destination is a famous spot for tourists as well as locals. Many celebrities have also visited the hotspot including American rapper Snoop Dogg, British singer Craig David, American band One Republic, as well as Bollywood stars and cricketers.

The shoes also feature six 'hero' Ravi dishes selected by restaurant owners — mutton Peshawari, chicken biryani, chicken tikka, daal fry, karak chai and Punjabi lassi. All six dish names have been added to the tongue of the sneakers with English and Arabic on either shoe.

Each pair of shoes are delivered in a special edition packaging that imitates a takeaway style box and comes with a detachable hangtag with the restaurant's logo on it.

Currently, the restaurant is managed by Chaudary's sons, Waqar, Waseem and Waheed Abdul Hameed.

Waheed told Khaleej Times, “We chose the six hero dishes because not only are they a community favourite, but we believe these are the must-haves at Ravi restaurant. Our six special dishes are featured on the limited-edition sneakers.”

“Our first input was selecting the Superstar sneaker, an iconic adidas silhouette, for the collaborative sneaker. We shared our vision with the global adidas design to help bring the sneaker to life. Our story is prevalent through the sneaker, and we’re so happy with the outcome," said Waseem.

Commenting on the collaboration as a whole, Waqar said, “As our restaurant is one of the city’s most nostalgic and culturally relevant restaurants, the match was perfect.”

The Superstar pair with Ravi written at the back will be available at select Adidas stores and online on June 23 exclusively in Dubai.

Those who are calling Ravi restaurant as Indian name are wrong, well it is a Indian name but it’s also name of one of the five rivers of Punjab. I have traveled quite a few countries and Pakistani restaurants do use “India food” to attract customers because that is what is more famous. But at the same time Pakistani food is very similar to North Indian(Punjabi) food and tasty as well just a bit more oily compared to Indian food. Pakistani many times hesitate or even feel ashamed of saying they are Pakistani except in UK and Canada for some obvious reasons. For Indians reading this most of the Pakistanis are very friendly and nice people. Language wise non Punjabi are very nice and soft to talk compared to Punjabi. Maybe it’s just the way Pakistani Punjabi are. Sorry for generalising. People from KP and Baluchistan were best once I met they are quite similar to Afganis I met in India. All is all so not just hate there are all kind of people even in a family. Hate Govt but love people

@JustSaying "Ravi" is a word that is commonly used in the HINDU faith. That does not make it INDIAN, as Hindu and India are not one and the same. Part of the Ravi flows in India, part in Pakistan. We have every right to use this word and claim it as Pakistani as it defines a Pakistani feature. Lastly, even the word Ravi comes from Sanskrit, which all linguists outside of Bharat agree is categorically not a language that originated in the subcontinent itself.

Now one can get these logos officially on any clothing or shoe accessories by paying a small fees to these companies. In US-Canada school and college teams get these logos on their sports clothing's, Not a big deal!

@JustSaying Firstly Ravi is one of the 5 main rivers of Punjab. The restaurant is named after that, as the owner is Punjabi. Secondly unlike Indians, Pakistanis don’t feel an inferiority complex about their heritage.

@A Thanks for your insight regarding Punjabis and their hard language , compared to non Punjabis, with their soft language etc. However, I am glad that in the end you admitted that it was a (crass and crude) generalization. As for the name Ravi, give credit to the owners of the restaurant that they named it after a famous river -which flows through their country as well. Lastly, they must be serving good food for the restaurant to survive for 40 plus years, for an iconic brand like Adidas to enter into a collaboration with them.

"The heel tab of the shoe also includes the year in which the restaurant opened. One shoe has the name and the year written in English while the other is in Arabic". It is indeed a small world, after almost 30 plus years, I still have in my closet a pair of Adidas-tennis sneakers with "the heel tab" showing the iconic Adidas logo-emblazoned "Stan Smith" and guess what, the color is "Green" no disrespect to the flag.
