The Hunger Games series bit the dust a long time ago but when a prequel stepped into the picture, fans welcomed it with open arms. Hunger Games Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was released in May 2020 and the reaction was positive enough for their to be a film adaptation of the novel that will hit the cinemas on November 17, 2023. We guess we never really get over our favourite books.

The series' official Instagram page announced the date, captioned, "Welcome back, tributes."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the announcement originally came during the Lionsgate presentation at CinemaCon accompanied by a brief teaser. “You’re invited to return to the Games,” read the screen as ice thawed in the background of a wintry scape, revealing a bird and a snake. “In 2023, the world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake.”

Produced by Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and Lawrence, the billion-dollar franchise follows the story of a young President Snow at a turning point in his life. The Lionsgate synopsis for the film reads, “In this return to The Hunger Games, years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow sees a chance for a change in fortunes when he is chosen to be a mentor to Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12.”

The film will be directed by Francis Lawrence, the mind behind the franchise’s Catching Fire, Mockingjay Part One and Mockingjay Part Two. The spin-off has creator Suzanne Collins, along with Michael Arndt and Michael Lesslie on board as the writers of the film.
