Jake Gyllenhaal breaks silence on Taylor Swift's 'All Too Well', says 'it has nothing to do with me'
American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift re-recorded her 2012 album Red, releasing "Taylor's Version" in late 2021, which featured an expansion for her song 'All Too Well', accompanied by a music video. The musician is known for incorporating her emotions about her past relationships in her music and left a trail of clues in the short film for the 10-minute song. Fans were quick to identify Jake Gyllenhaal as the ex-boyfriend in question and quickly stormed social media with angry reactions. The actor had kept mum about the song until now.
The music video tells the story of their three-month romance that seemingly ended in Gyllenhaal breaking her heart.
"It has nothing to do with me. It's about her relationship with her fans," the Brokeback Mountain actor told Esquire in a new interview, published on Feb 17. "It is her expression. Artists tap into personal experiences for inspiration, and I don't begrudge anyone that."
He added that it's important when supporters get "unruly" that we feel a responsibility to have them be civil and not allow cyberbullying in one's name. "That begs for a deeper philosophical question. Not about any individual, per se, but a conversation that allows us to examine how we can — or should, even — take responsibility for what we put into the world, our contributions into the world."
Swifties had taken over social media after the release of the song in Nov 2021, bashing Gyllenhaal for what they say as his mistreatment of Swift, which led him to turning commenting off on his Instagram profile.
When asked specifically if he's listened to Red (Taylor's Version), Gyllenhaal replied, "No."
Red (Taylor’s Version) debuted in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 album chart, while 'All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)' debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. The track marked Swift’s eighth No. 1 single.
It's been a decade to their romance and the two have moved on — Swift has her long-term boyfriend Joe Alwyn and Gyllenhaal is in a relationship with 26-year-old model Jeanne Cadieu.
