Alizeh Shah gets flak for doing things other people (read: men) can do with impunity

It doesn't seem to matter what she does, as long as she's doing it, people are going to have a problem.
30 Dec, 2021

Every few months the internet gets outraged over Alizeh Shah — not something she says and rarely something she does but her existence and insistence on living her life the way she pleases.

Take today, for example. Today people are angry because someone invaded Shah's privacy and filmed her smoking in a car. Has this virtuous watchdog of Pakistani culture and morals been called out for blatantly invading someone's privacy and filming that someone without their consent? Of course not, that's not how this works.

How does it work, you will then ask. Well, the formula goes something like this — Alizeh Shah exists and people get mad. Alizeh Shah wears a dress at an event where hundreds of other women wear dresses and people are angry. Alizeh Shah cuts her hair short and people are furious. Alizeh Shah sets boundaries at her workplace and people are infuriated. Alizeh Shah wears a tank-top and people lose their minds.

The pattern here is that people will get mad no matter what Alizeh Shah does, so she should continue doing what she wants.

We're not going to comment on what she's wearing or smoking or doing but we will say this — she's getting a lot of flak for doing things that other people (read: men) can do with impunity. For some reason, the fact that Alizeh Shah is doing this antagonises people to no end. Look at the video of her smoking, for example. No one seems concerned that this 21-year-old was filmed at a traffic light by a random person or that she's been made into a poster child for the pitfalls of the entertainment industry. Let's stop using Shah as a punching bag.

2021 is drawing to a close and one thing we definitely hope people will leave behind is stalking celebrities and then having the stunning lack of awareness to pass judgement on them. Let's leave this judgemental behaviour behind this year and look forward to a shiny new year where, hopefully, we just judge actors based on their acting rather than their personal lives.

Are you saying that her fans do not have the right to comment about her? Positive or negative, if there is a comment section then people will use it. But I do agree a FIR of the person who made the video must be filed.

With the number of channels in hundreds and dramas in thousands; who ever can breath is an artist. Quality is no consideration and hence so called artists like her, trying to remain in news desperately.

Well those who wrote this piece also come from People (read: Pakistanis) in general. And not all Pakistanis may have commented on that. May be they would, but they are so much engaged in meeting their daily chores that they don't even care who wear what and smokes where? But lets just say that writer of this piece reviews the timeline and only gets the negative tweets / posts on the video that went viral and held the entire male population in the contempt. That's just sad. If irony had a face, it's very likely that it resembles the editor of this post.

From the very first sentence the author appears biased in defending Shah. Do note Shah is a attempting to acquire a 'celebrity' status and hence the definition of privacy and its application somewhat changes. Do educate yourself on privacy laws as well as quote the Pakistani laws if applicable, provided anything in PPC (Pakistani Penal Code) was violated. Writing an article just for the sake of it doesn't make a cut. Also, justifying one wrong while providing proof of wrong committed by others and bringing in gender to justify the equation i.e. playing equal representation card in this report is hitting below the belt. He did it so I will do it to ain't going to help anyone. Not sure what has happened to Dawn. Possibly this is an opinion article but, frankly, too biased. Did Alizeh herself jot it down in third person?

Sorry but she has picked her path, and sounds like she is very capable of ‘setting boundaries’ for herself. She must have been comfortable smoking whilst on her travels knowing full well if someone recognises her they will take a picture, so why the uproar? Which celeb doesn’t get snapped by paperazzi or random people? I’m not saying they don’t have a right to privacy, but you cannot have the best of both worlds, be in the limelight and have privacy when you are outside, and if you didn’t want to get snapped smoking, then ghar bhet kar peeti!

Is Alizeh Shah a celebrity in Pak? If she is then it is all fair because when you become a celebrity, what you do or say is bread and butter of news organizations i.e. some people make a living of what you do and say news.

@Ali "since when is hate speech a right ". Since 1400years! Freedom of speech is a fundamental right in Islam. Hate speech is a corollary to the freedom of speech and religion. It is especially protected, the caveats and controls are in ones free will, within oneself, ones own responsibility. It is a test of ones character. Self discipline and control is reflected in ones speech.

99pc adult males of pak smoke , if a woman smokes its a big deal. I remember visiting a friends university in lahore a popular one where guys would idle outside departments and chain smoke and my friend told me if a girl will be spotted smoking, next day uni ersity officials will start issuing new moral conduct rules which will only be applicable to women. Also ironic 70 pc old to middleaged women in rural punjab smoke huqqah which is exactly same thing as cigarettes only that huqqsh is 70pc more lethal than cigarettes, but all of it is jayez but OMG a cigarette makes her lose character woman, it's not called acting judgemental but acting like a dirtbag.
