When will we tell our own stories, asks Yasir Hussain as Bollywood announces series on Lahore's Heera Mandi

Netflix and Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali have teamed up for a series on Lahore's courtesans.
10 Aug, 2021

Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is making a series on Lahore's infamous Heera Mandi for Netflix, it has been announced. The news may have created a stir in Bollywood, but for many Pakistani artists, it's a reminder of how we ignore our own stories.

Heera Mandi is a historical red-light district near the Lahore Fort. The district, whose name translates as “Diamond Market”, is close to the Badshahi Mosque.

During the Mughal era, Heera Mandi was a centre for mujra, traditional singing and dancing performed for the elites.

The tagline for the film, titled Heeramandi, is "where courtesans were queens". Bhansali, the brains behind Ram Leela, is known for the vibrant imagery and intricate details of his films and there is no doubt that the series will be visually appealing.

"This is in Lahore and the movie is being made by Indians," wrote actor Yasir Hussain in his Instagram Stories.

"Then we’ll say everything was portrayed incorrectly. I don’t know when we’ll talk about our own things, when we’ll tell our own stories," he wrote. It's easy to understand his frustration. There are so many stories to tell in Pakistan but more often than not, our entertainment industry focuses on stories that have already been told ad nauseam.

We will be able to write and produce quality films and plays on our own history when we will be morally strong to take the responsibility of our history on our own land. We do not own our history. How can we produce true art. Indians glorified their Umrao Jaan Ada . Can we write something about our own powerful women in past who were not a part of pseudo moralistic set up but had laid down foundations of art, culture and etiquette culture in civic life.

In india people are dropping dead, indian virus is rampant, bodies floating in rivers, yet their media is making film about heera mandi. Modi has his priorities twisted.

In return, Pakistan should make such stories on Bhindi Bazar, which is the Heramandi of Bombay, now Mumbai.

This is set in pre independent india when Lahore was very much a part of india. Going by this man’s logic we shouldn’t make any movies on Bharat Singh because he was in Pakistani Punjab.

For Pakistanis, their history starts from 1947, thanks to the 70-year long manipulation of the minds by their establishment. It's too late now.

The series is set in Lahore of pre-independent India. BEFORE the Partition. Before Pakistan was created. So it's 100% story of Hindustan. Looking forward on Netflix India.

@Chrís Dăn Indians portrayed Umrao as a victim of her circumstances and so did the Pakistanis. I believe the Pakistani production was much superior to the work that was produced in those times by both industries.

Pakistan rejects much of its own history and culture and that is why there is literally no movies or documentaries on it. The disguise of being arabs has choked all creativity and exploration of the past. Even the arabs of today are more modern and reject all Pakistani notion of having any connection with them.

@Chrís Dăn - One of the biggest stories of the 19th century was the creation of Pakistan. Our political leaders of that time wrote that story and executed it with the help of our elders. It was very different from the world wars of that time because we were not trying to invade or occupy anyone. Based on your definition, even the US doesn't have a history because that land was once under the native's control.

In fact, we don't try the historical issues on celluloid rather than copy others. Don't blame 'courage' it's all about creativity and enthusiasm that is fading out from our nationalism. we're the old-fashioned followers and NOT leaders. Take an example of Ertughral - this is an example to bring history to the small screen. Heera Mundi is a test for Bollywood bad boys. I guarantee they are not going to depict a true picture of Heera Mundi but to insult our culture and heritage. They made several movies against Pakistan and readers are witnesses who have seen what they targeted nothing but the Muslim nation and country at large.
