Pakistani Twitter celebrates as Babar Azam becomes fastest cricketer to reach 14 ODI centuries

Pakistan may have lost the ODI to England but Azam is being praised for his stunning 158-run knock.
14 Jul, 2021

Pakistani Twitter is celebrating Babar Azam for becoming the fast cricketer to reach 14 ODI centuries, beating Virat Kohli and several other international players.

Pakistan lost the match (and series) to England but Azam's brilliant 158 knock has set several records. It's Azam's highest one-day international score, made him the fastest player to 14 ODI centuries by number of innings and the first Pakistani captain to score a century in England in 38 years.

He also became the first Pakistani captain to score 150 runs in an inning.

Social media was full of celebrations for the Pakistani captain.

Some took weird satisfaction in his skill.

There was lots of fun being made of India's Kohli.

Others, like singer Asim Azhar, warned people to never doubt greatness.

Some fans had given up hope after Azam was out for a duck in the first ODI and 19 in the second. England won both those matches as well.

But they saw the 158 as a redemption for Azam, who previously dethroned Kohli to become the world's number one ODI batsman.

His innings received a standing ovation from fans at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground.

Fans compared him to another captain, the last captain to hit a century in England.

Others paid tribute to him and said this proved he wasn't a selfish player.

Some people believe he's a national treasure.

Take a bow, captain.

What was your reaction to the match and Azam's innings?

Against Sri Lanka x 3 Against West Indies x 4 Against Zimbabwe x 2 Against NZ x 1 Against Eng X 1 Against SA X 1 Against Eng x 2 Against Aus x 1 9 against the underdogs; easy to mess with numbers. Not that i am saying he's not a good player.

Congratulations, a great cricketer is in making. But sorry to say he failed to stimulate the team to have what was seem to be an easy victory.

In a class of his own. But shouldn't become like Sachin. Country first, always.

Rizwan and Babar are very fine strategist. They convinced the English team in first 2 unimportant innings that they were out of touch, then when the English were relaxed in the most crucial inning, they came out to show their batting masterclass and the English were stunned. It was a very good strategy, just that they got mixed up about which inning was more important than the others, but that is just a detail that can be forgotten given the fact they have shown such masterclass.

No individual century or double century is important, if you could not lead your team to victory

This shows where their priorities are.. just self portrayal and benefits. and Your century is futile like always as no leadership or captaincy skills were shown by you babar.

Whatta player? A hundred is always like winning. Quickest to 14 hundreds… imagine if he played as many matches as Kohli? Babar would have scored 45 ODI hundreds i.e. 7 ODI hundreds more than king Kohli. Imagine if he played 429 matches? Emperor Babar would have scored 75 ODI hundreds i.e. 25 hundreds more than Tendulkar. Even PMIK can’t match Emperor’s batting talent. Such a talent and captain. Age is on his side. So he is the greatest ever player and captain from the universe.

The last 7 wkts thought they can come and hit the six first ball, they thought have crossed 300 , game is in the pocket so lets go out and hit airy weary shots!!! Shaheen shah attitude in the first over when he got hit for 16 runs - was laughing- set the tone. The bowlers had no plans except bowling short. two bowlers bowling at less than 6, bowled only 5 overs each. This brand of cricket will leave no followers. Every interview is same, we made mistakes next time will improve. Bhai till when are you going to make same mistakes? B teams are making records against you. whopping bag team ban gai hae . misbah has brought in tuk tuk mentality, no strike rotation !! bring back mickey- amir

As a personal achievement its great but his team lost 3-0 to a third string England team. Apart from Stokes, not a single player in this playing XI is England's first choice. He needs to do better with the team selection.
