Mehwish Hayat shares happy update about airport washrooms being cleaned up

"Thank you to the authorities who listened to my request and took action," said the actor.
Updated 25 Feb, 2020

It's been a month since Mehwish Hayat shared her "misfortune of using the ladies room at Karachi airport."

"Disgusting! Dirty and stinking," Hayat had shared in a Tweet. "Even saw cockroaches. Not only is it unhygienic but is this the first impression we want to give to people arriving here?"

"These are the most basic amenities — let's clean up our act."

It looks like her concerns have been heard as action has been taken to fix up the restrooms at the airport and Hayat made sure to keep us in the loop.

Sharing pictures of the construction being carried out, Hayat tweeted, "So gratifying to pass through Karachi Airport today and see this work being carried out on the gents and ladies’ rooms."

She added, "Airports are the first impression that visitors have of our country and it should be a good one. Thank you to the authorities who listened to my request and took action."

Mehwish Hayat's previous tweet had led to many opening up about their own experiences at the airport and it's good to know that raising one's voice on social media can lead to change.

They should also change the mind set of the working staff, all the time looking for TIPS instead working. They always hide the tissue rolls and other items and will provide after sensing money from the passenger.

I have no idea who this lady is but getting the modern toilets is a great start and deserves all the credit for highlighting this. The real question is who is going to teach at least 70% of people in Pakistan, who have never used these modern toilets?. Very soon, we will have very modern but dirty, stinking, unhygienic and unusable toilets again.

It’s great that the Airport Authorities have taken notice of the situation and are taking remedial action. Kudos to Mehwish. They also need to take action against those unruly porters who demand excessive payments in Foreign Currencies from travellers inside the arrival lounge before even touching their luggage. The Authorities must think of those feeble and elderly individuals who are left at the mercy of these unscrupulous, greedy and out of control porters. It is high time discipline and order was restored.

The plight of rest rooms at our national airports are always reported the worst. Is it the the responsibility of the passengers to bring it to the notice of airport administrators or it is their responsibility to upkeep airport and restrooms clean, tidy, and up to international standards? Will the authorities will bring culprit(s) to book? How can we expects tourists to visit our where even the first expression could count as the last!

Civil Aviation in Pakistan is blood sucker. All the airports are dirty. Where goes the heavy airport tax? For hiring a loader Civil Aviation charges Rs. 400,--. No control - No Supervision - No Facility. Shame on Civil Aviation. Feel the Civil Aviation any shame?

Before the renovation of the washrooms we also need to wash the mindset of the greater national population for how to use it. .

Kudos to the outspoken Ms. Hayat! A total package: Beauty and the brains. Could you and Mahira please run for office when you’re done with Showbiz? The country could use brazenly honest and sincere women as leaders for a change.

Good call by the actor. Now if she can influence them to clean up the city. Its embarrasingly dirty and so are the unwashed, unkempt people. What would tourists think?

You wouldn't find this even in some third world banana republics airports so it shows that something is amiss when a known Public figure rises up to criticize about a basic human necessity at a busy Pakistani airport ..I hope someone in public health ministry will take notice to ensure that public restrooms maintenance is enforced to avoid the spread of disease..

Yes, that is not only the First Impression but a long lasting impression too. I still can’t forget the very pleasant experience of using the translucent small cubical toilet at the Paris Airport few years ago which was not only very clean but was also perfumed and so fragrant that one could feel being in Paris.

An unusual but very accurate observation. People normally don't talk about the gents and ladies rooms and this observation by Ms. Hayat has made a difference. A very important one. Thank you and Salams.

Sincere thank you to the lady for raising this concern. I and family starve and dehydrate ourselves while traveling back home to Karachi for the fear of needing to visit the washroom in Karachi airport.

What impressed me was that Mewish used her celebrity status to call out a faulty public facility and it was fixed. That is Naya Pakistan, where everyone is getting involved in bettering the nation, in their own way, which never happened before.
