If you thought your Monday was chaotic...

Lahore University of Management Sciences, commonly abbreviated as LUMS, has chosen to rebrand as Lums University as part of a recent overhaul and notified staff and students via email this morning.

The move is an acknowledgement of the diversity of disciplines on campus and a move towards more inclusivity, which is great — but also falls victim to the RAS: redundant acronym syndrome, in which one or more words from an acronym are repeated in conjunction with the abbreviated form.

Faculty, students and alumni have become resigned to the fact.

It’s just not the same

Same same, but no different?

But it’s not unique and may be easier to explain

This energy could’ve gone somewhere else

Also, how is it pronounced now?

Yes?

Oh, LUMSU. Always trending for the wrong reasons on social media.

If they are now treating Lums as a word then Lums University should be abbreviated to LU, not LUMSU!! Ideally they should have just dropped the Management Sciences and changed it to 'Lahore University'. It makes sense if the idea is that they offer a lot more than just management courses.

What is this useless news item? I don't care if LUMS becomes LUMSU.

MCB has done it from Muslim Commercial Bank to MCB, probably to avoid negativity with 'Muslim' in international transactions. Image issues are understandable...

So, Lahore University of Management Sciences University? Yeah, that makes complete sense. Plus, Lums sounds respectable. Lumsu sounds like the nickname of a five-year-old kid.

From the prospective of university management, it makes sense. They want to get rid of assumption that the university just teaches management and sciences subjects, but more, so LUMS University makes sense in that prospective.
