Faryal Makhdoom thinks stay-at-home moms should be paid wages more than surgeons

She makes a fair point about all the unpaid and invisible labour women do!
08 Jun, 2019

While appearing on Good Morning Britain, Faryal Makhdoom was of the opinion that stay-at-home mothers (or as she describes them: "CEO of the house") should receive a salary.

"We’re not just looking after our children but the entire house. A CEO of the house that’s not getting paid. It’s laundry, cooking, cleaning, looking after your children, and I think when you put it all together, we should get paid more than a surgeon or a lawyer, it adds up to £100k a year, more than that," she shared in conversation with hosts, Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway.

She addressed the elephant in the room by admitting that she has help around the house but added: "What about some of my friends who can’t afford it, they have to leave work to look after their children because childcare is more expensive and their husband’s don’t have that extra money to give their wives. I feel like we’re helping the economy by staying home and doing all the work we would be getting from the government."

Amelle Berrabah, a former Sugababes band member disagreed with her, saying that having children is a choice and shouldn't be viewed as a job. Makhdoom also recieved a lot of flak for her view online.

However, we feel like Makhdoom does make a fair point about the unpaid labour that women do across the globe but especially in desi households.

Our society thinks household chores are the responsibility of women alone. These tasks include childcare, cooking, cleaning, domestic upkeep, the list goes on. And don't even get us started on the emotional labour of keeping a family together.

Either women are not working because "who will look after the household then?" or they are and are shouldering a double burden: juggling between the domestic set-up and a career with little to no help from their partners. We need to be having conversations about the redistribution of domestic work and the invisible labour women have been doing for years and continue to do today.

Our Mothers, Sisters and daughters do lot of work which should get recognition. In my opinion these should be paid at least 50% of their husband's earnings straight in their bank accounts.

And i agree fully! Stay home moms are home makers! That is not a 9-5 but 24/7 job. Plus taking care of kids and mentoring them. Moms are the best just like my mom is who is 98 year old now and lives in Pakistan. And - she still worries if I have eaten or not! Love all mothers! A pardaisee Pakistani Amreeki

There is assumption that men just don't contribute to household help and children raising. Men do a lot of work in the house after their regular jobs.

They do have access to most of the money the husband makes, shopping and plastic surgery payments (in her case), and the house, half of the property in case of a divorce. This is a pretty good deal.

Surgeons declare their fees upfront before surgery. Kindly let your fees be known before hand please. I have a feeling there will be a lot of unemployed home-maker surgeons.

"We should get paid more than a surgeon or a lawyer". She needs to do the math. By the way. Surgeons make more that 100 pounds a year. Some triple that.

Reducing lady of the house to the status of a maid is what madam Farayal is asking for. The concept of a 'Paid mother' is ridiculous

If two women with 2 children each start their own daycare center charging $1000 per child per month they can each make $2000 per month by just sending their own children to the other person's home. This will add to the GDP. But if they take care of their own children they get paid nothing and are ridiculed for staying home and not contributing to the society. Is that fair?

The contribution of stay at home moms often remains neglected for the simple reason that the value of their work is not translated into dollars and cent and therefore beyond the ambit of Economics. A time has come when necessary laws are passed to assign currency value of different activities of stay at home moms and women. At least a part of this value should be paid to such women by the concerned government.

While you are right about mother's invaluable contribution to family, for the very same reason, it cannot be quantified in terms of salary. This is what makes her soul of the family, a debt that cannot be repaid. Better than paying salary, partners and children should be taught how to share her workload.
