AR Rahman claps back at trolls, supports his daughter's choice to wear a niqab

The music maestro posted a photo of his daughters on Twitter with hashtag #FreedomToChoose

AR Rahman has no time for anyone's negativity, neither does his daughter Khatija.

At an event that marked 10 years of AR Rahman's Slumdog Millionaire Oscar win, the singer's daughter was invited on stage to interview her father.

When his daughter stepped on stage wearing a niqab, social media immediately jumped to conclusions, labeling the singer conservative for Khatija's choice of attire.

Paying no heed to trolls or haters, the singer uploaded a photo of the women in his family on Twitter with caption: #FreedomToChoose.

His daughter also took to social media to defend her father. Khatija wrote: "There were certain comments which said that this attire is being forced by my dad and that he has double standards. I would like to say that the attire I wear or the choices I make in my life does not have anything to do with my parents."

She added, "The veil has been my personal choice with complete acceptance and honour. I’m a sane mature adult who knows to make my choices in life. Any human being has a choice to wear or do what he/she wants and that’s what I’ve been doing. Hence, kindly don’t make your own judgement without understanding the exact situation."

Well, she is a mature and major (of legal age) lady and her right to dress should be respected.

Good for AR Rehman and his daughter Khadija. She is her own woman and has every right to choose what to wear. How dare anyone attack her for wearing a niqab, hijab or any other apparel.

Why are people so fickle minded and judgemental? I guess it's down to fear originating from sheer ignorance.

Why do we always judge women in our society? She's not wearing enough, she's covering too much. Who the hell are we to judge her or her parents? Why don't we get on with our own lives? She has all the right in the world to choose whatever she wants to wear or not to wear.

It’s her choice what to wear. Although I prefer a hijab where at least you can see the person’s face you are talking to. The full face covering dress looks strange. But it’s her choice.

Agree it is her business and no one else’s. But she should be a law abiding citizen like the rest. Would she obey if a cop stops her for a traffic violation and ask her to show her face for identification?

I hope 'those' who wants others to respect somebody's choice and talking about 'freedom of choice' will say the same words when one of their own makes a choice which is against their own ideology.

Pathetic - after been born and brought up in multi cultural educated environment, especially in South India, to say that women voluntarily choose to wear burqa is humbug and shows the medieval mind set. The less said the better.

Full face veil should be banned all over the world. This shows women in very bad light and not acceptable in 21st century. Regarding her choice, it might be due to family teaches her conservative things when child there wearing full face burqua

@ijaz .Agree but the same must be respected if a woman does not wear a scarf or wears a bikini in a swimming pool instead of burquini.

Tell me Khatija, would you have been equally supportive and vocal if his daughter went around in a bikini? If you want people to be open minded, they will demand the same of you!

Hats off to both father & daughter. What business is it of anyone who does what so long it is not harming anyone else. If someone is being hurt they need to look into what is making them so weak & fragile to be treated by others in this way. Some people want to impose their own values on others.
