Imran Khan is upset that people are making fun of his chicken idea

Imran Khan is upset that people are making fun of his chicken idea

Why is it okay when Bill Gates says it, asks Imran Khan
Updated 01 Dec, 2018

On November 29, Imran Khan gave a speech on his government's progress in the first 100 days of his tenure as Pakistan's PM.

He spoke about life as the new PM, tackling corruption... and chickens.

Guess which one Twitter latched on to?

Pakistani Twitter could not comprehend Imran's plans for the local poultry industry and seized the moment to have a laugh.

The memes and comparison began.

And people were not holding back.

Imran Khan clearly did not enjoy the humour and actually had a clapback ready in hand.

He called out his critics for their hypocrisy, posting an article about Bill Gates' poverty alleviation strategy involving poultry farming to empower impoverished families .

Says Khan in his tweet, "For the colonised minds ,when desis talk about chickens combating poverty they get mocked, but when "walaitis" [foreigners] talk about desi chicken and poverty it's brilliance!"

Despite continuous mockery, many did share the article and supported Imran Khan's statement. But perhaps had he phrased his plans for the poultry industry better, he wouldn't have been met with such humour. After all, Bill Gates didn't announce his plans during a political speech.

Also, chickens are kinda funny.

What’s needs to be understood is that giving out new ideas on a daily basis is not a good political idea. Trump tweets on a daily basis and people laugh at him too.

Interestingly, I had read Bill's article when it was first published and was truly impressed at such a 'simple' solution to address poverty and better community building! Hence, I was certainly delighted (and was smiling!) when IK mentioned chickens in his speech! And yes I agree, providing a context is always helpful in explaining an idea or a solution! Hats off to IK! :-)

Desparate times demand despararate measures! There is no doubt most of the pak is living below the poverty line so the pm is rightly offering some basic and ground level advice to those in need. Those mocking must not forget: pakistan is among the poorest countries of the world and thats not FUNNY.

Tyson Foods began in 1935 with chickens. This was during the American Depression. John Tyson started selling chickens. Today Market Capitalization for this company is $21.07 BILLION. Let's make a difference too.

That idea is a bit antiquated for 2018. Gates meant it for Africa. In those areas they can only raise organic chickens not farmhouse ones and they have to to take them to the city to get premium prices. Cottage industries would be a better idea for them than raising chickens.

Any idea about the kind of inputs are required to produce a kilogram of chicken meat? I would expect that a chicken in its lifetime consumes hundreds of liters of water and many kilograms of fodder to get to its size. Only if we can consume chicken in moderation, it will be much health and environmental friendly too.

I know it sounds funny and people make fun of it but the wise will understand. We need to figure out how to feed 207 million people including protein rich food for children to eliminate stunted growth problems. Food security is a highest priority for any nation. China attained food security before opening its doors to the world in 1988. Growing food (poultry is part of it) could create micro business opportunities for the poor. It can not only provide a respectable livelihood to many poor families and also contribute to national food security. We also need the women to engage in micro businesses. Farm grown poultry in punjab is fully controlled by Hamza Shahbaz Sharif . As the people gain knowledge, the demand for natural & organic food is rapidly growing and the Prime Minister’s vision is on the correct path. Farm grown poultry is spreading diseases and needs to be strictly regulated until we start producing natural poultry in bulk for a healthy nation.

Imran Khan is great. Yes, chicken can be a multifaceted solution for impoverished population. In Bangaldesh and India microfinancing has made huge improvements in village life especially of Women. So small small ideas are needed for improving peoples life in stages.

Get desi chicken, in front of wickets, on a cricket pitch, in stadium, in Lahore. Get a fast bowler, a spinner, with a U Turn. Bowl chicken out or maybe LBW. Buy eggs at market to complement meal. End of match, start of dinner. Salute Imran Khan.

@Rizwan Bill Gates might be an IT Guru while IK is PM of Pakistan but did you know that the net worth of Microsoft is 752 billion USD while the entire 2017 GDP of Pakistan was 305 billion USD. IK and Pakistan sadly don't even have the resources that Bill Gates and Microsoft alone have. Crooks from the previous governments have left us in a state where simple yet effective solutions such as the poultry one suggested by IK have become the need of the hour to provide some relief to the most poor of our country.

Mr Khan, what's appreciable about you, is you aren't trying to be politically correct all the time. First step to solving any problem is recognizing there is one. Pakistan is lucky to have a PM who has a vision to solve those problems with ideas that involve the common man of Pakistan.
