Serena Williams is banned from wearing a catsuit at the French Open and people are not happy

A woman might be the greatest tennis player around but it'll always be about her clothes
25 Aug, 2018

Serena Williams wore a black catsuit as her return to the grand slam finals.

The suit, made by Nike, was no ordinary fashion statement. It was designed to protect against blood clots, a condition the tennis player was diagnosed with after the birth of her daughter.

Apparently, the suit which allowed Serena to return to tennis (and win the first round, just saying) caused a stir, with French Open president calling for a ban on the attire, Independent reports.

Said Bernard Giudicelli, “I believe we have sometimes gone too far. Serena’s outfit this year, for example, would no longer be accepted. You have to respect the game and the place.”

According to Giudicelli, Williams will have to dress more conservatively for future French Opens. Even though she suffers from haematoma.

About the suit, Serena had said, "“I feel like a warrior in it, like a warrior princess kind of queen from Wakanda maybe... I’ve always wanted to be a superhero, and it’s my way of being a superhero."

She added, "I’ve been wearing pants a lot in general when I play so I can keep the blood circulation going. It’s a fun suit, but it’s also functional so I can play without any problems."

The suit has been made with functionality in mind but Serena's ability as a player comes second to her appearance. Its 2018 and we still can't look past a woman's attire, even when it is made exactly for the occasion.

While Serena Williams has yet to respond to the incident, social media is abuzz, calling out the French Open president for racism and sexism.

Serena the all time great in tennis , does not need the French Open to prove herself. It is French who need her to play in France. Chairman French tennis association is nothing but racist pervert. You can see more nudity on French beaches than in a tennis court.

French authority should leave her alone and respect her ailments. She is a bright spot of the sport and is not doing this for attention.

While I am all for enforcing dress codes, surely exceptions can be made under certain circumstances, medical reasons being among them?

What exactly is their objection? What is deemed to be wrong with it?

French authorities have gone nut.The suit is just fine, what is wrong with it.More so because it has been designed to suit her medical condition. The imaginative Prresident of France should intervene and allow Sarena to play tennis and overcome this fuss. This objection is simply disgusting.

The decision is wrong, but perhaps we should go easy on the "racist and sexist" allegations please? Any response that begins with a comment on "white people" or the comments here that say "the french" are perverts, are definitely generalizing on the basis of ethnicity, and that's definitely bigotry.
