Veteran actor Jahan Ara gets backlash for tiger hunting stories in interview

Viewers of her interview are upset that her interviewer glorified the hunting

Veteran TV actor Jahan Ara Hai has drawn criticism for her casual mention of tiger hunting in her interview on Hamare Mehman on ARY News yesterday. Viewers of the show are also upset that her interviewer glorified the hunting.

Tigers are an engandered species, according to WWF, with less than 4000 tigers remaining in the world.

The Lala Begum actor shares that she would often join her husband when he hunted and it never scared her "because she had a gun".

In her interview, she showed off the head of a tiger that her husband hunted and several photos of his exploits.

She also told of a time when she joined her husband during a leopard hunt. She said she drove the jeep while her husband tracked the animal and fired several shots. They sped home when they realised that the possibly injured animal could retaliate with an attack. The actor said they returned with assistance the following morning to find the animal and it was discovered by the locals "while it was still warm". She shared "they picked it up, took photos, and gave its meat to the locals for their children."

After local comic artist Arslan brought the issue to light, many other viewers voiced their disappointment over Humare Mehman glorifying hunting:

What is wrong in sharing the truth. She only mentioned the real story and it should be taken as a lesson for future that hunting is bad. Those were the times when hunting was legal and all Maharajas kept a Cheeta squad to aid in hunting, it was common before and after partition till 1960s.

Don't be quick to judge others. Hunting - when performed under proper legal and ethical norms - is one of the best way to earn revenue to upkeep the very preservation efforts of these endangered animals as obtaining license for hunting comes at a high cost. Moreover, hunters are required to abide by strict criteria to hunt only those animals who are past their prime and are likely to die an agonizing, slow and painful death otherwise (because of their old age, inability to hunt and isolation or infighting). If done properly, its just like cutting the overgrown or nearly dead branch of a plant in order to enable other healthy branches to thrive. However, illegal hunting is a completely different thing which should be condemned.

The stories she narrated were from a different time. Hunting if conducted responsibly helps with conservation. Irresponsible and indiscriminate hunting are the one of causes of any species decline but it's poaching that is the biggest threat to any species. Hunting predators in Asia is banned due to rapid decline as a result of poaching. I agree with the first comment that your editing and reporting team could have done a better job of presenting the subject so that it didn't come across as carefree.

I am quite surprised at people's reaction to hunting here. Why have we got double standards ? I have never seen people reacting in this manner to people's killings in Pakistan, especially those belonging to minorities. What happens to us then? Do we think people belonging to minorities are inferior to animals or is it a fashion to react to animal hunting? Is there any explanation for this phenomen?

Jahan Ara, this is in poor taste. You and husband with guns can kill and show the dead animals as a trophy? Get a trophy at acting because that is earned.
