Commercial cinema can change mindsets, says Akshay Kumar

The actor thinks documentaries can't convey the same message because audiences can relate better with actors

Akshay Kumar has been doing some good work.

His recent flicks like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and PadMan highlighted real issues in society such as lack of sanitation and menstruation hygiene respectively.

Clearly, he's a man on a mission who believes mainstream cinema can actually change perceptions.

“Documentary films won’t help because people want to see a hero-heroine falling in love, fighting with parents, fighting with villains. Commercial cinema will create such impact because audiences relate with actors,” Akshay said at the Niine Menstrual Awareness Conclave on Monday.

“I got feedback from people for my film, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha who said, 'Your film actually changed mindsets’,” he added.

The Niine movement is an ambitious five-year plan aimed at raising awareness about the importance of menstrual hygiene and tackling the taboos associated with menstruation. The conclave has Akshay's support as he too has a hand in starting a conversation about these topics through his movies.
