Shoaib Malik, Sania Mirza announce they're expecting!

And the baby will have the last name, Mirza-Malik
Updated 24 Apr, 2018

The ace tennis player and the Pakistani cricketer have announced news of Sania's pregnancy.

And the baby will be taking his mother's surname too, it seems!

In an official statement, the couple said they were "ecstatic":

“We are soon to become parents. Having thought about it for a while, we both felt right now is the correct time to start a family. When we found out, we were ecstatic and couldn't wait to give out this news to our fans and well-wishers. We are very excited to enter this new phase of our lives and look forward to our journey as parents.” said Mirza.

During a discussion on 'Gender Bias' at Goa Fest 2018, Sania had shared: "Today I will tell you a secret. My husband and I have spoken about it and we have decided that whenever we have a child, the child will have Mirza Malik as a surname and not just Malik. So that's where we stand as a family including my husband. He actually wants a daughter."

"I have not changed my surname (post marriage) and my name is still Sania Mirza and it will remain that way. The family name is going to go forward," she said. Go Sania!

The couple have been married for eight years and Mirza-Malik will be their firstborn.

Muslims are one Ummah. It don't matter if we are devided by national borders. We are one and the same. This is bigger then race, language, color, culture or even geography. We forefathers believed in this and so do we.
