Netflix pays the queen in The Crown less than her husband

Shouldn't the award winning actor playing the lead be paid better?

She's not known for histrionics, but Queen Elizabeth II would surely struggle to maintain her famous poise if she knew the actress playing her on The Crown earned less than the man portraying her husband.

Producers admitted Tuesday that Matt Smith, Prince Philip on the hit Netflix drama, negotiated a better deal than Claire Foy because of his perceived higher profile.

They did not reveal either salary -- Foy's was put at $40,000 an episode by Variety last year -- but told a panel event in Jerusalem that Smith's 2010-2013 starring role on the BBC's Doctor Who had been the decisive factor.

The explanation has not appeased critics who argued that the discrepancy should only have shown up in the first season, before Foy was garlanded with awards and acclaim.

Foy, 33, was already making a name for herself in British costume drama, with roles in Upstairs Downstairs and Wolf Hall, when she was tapped to play the queen.

The part has earned her a host of award season nominations, including at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Emmys and Screen Actors Guild awards. She has won two SAGs and a Globe.

Suzanne Mackie, one of the show's producers, told the Jerusalem audience the discrepancy was being resolved for the third season but that will not benefit Foy.

The Crown, which costs $7 million an episode to produce, is replacing its leads for the start of filming in July, with Olivia Colman stepping in as the queen and an actor to replace Smith not yet announced.

Helena Bonham-Carter will replace Vanessa Kirby as Elizabeth's sister, the late Princess Margaret.

The series comes from the pen of Peter Morgan, who first lifted the veil on the private world of Elizabeth II in The Queen (2006), which was directed by Stephen Frears and earned Helen Mirren an Oscar in the title role.

The 'Queen' doesn' t need the money. She's already the richest person in the UK and one of the richest land-owners in the World. But this is hollywood. The pay gap btween men and women is as alive as racial discrimination .

They should take a note from Bollywood. Deepika was paid 13 crore for padmawati, Ranveer 5 crore and shahid 3 crore. Same with movie queen, kahaani, English vinglish, jazba lead heroine was paid more than hero.

Slowly and steadily, India is overtaking and leading the world in each and every aspect - whether space, diplomacy, cricket, culture, soft-power. This is the difference between long-running real civilizations and transient acronyms, how much ever the attempts for parity in global respect, power and world dominance tomorrow .

@Yet another Indian sri1 Dear Sir, I live in the West so I am not biased against India or Indians. I am happy that India is progressing and doing good. I think people from South Asian countries are hard working and deserve a lot better. Having said that, India is no where close to 'leading' the world. Please don't be so naïve. 400+ million people living in utter poverty, female abortions and infanticide, endemic rape and violence against women, poor infrastracture (and lack of toilets), illiteracy and caste and religion based discrimination are only some of the problems that India has. I am not saying these problems do not exist in Pakistan - they do. But I am not naive enough to paint an "all is well" picture. Also, Pakistan is not as bad as you think. Up until the late 1990s, we were doing better than India (economic and social indicators). The fact that we are growing despite terrorism and endemic corruption is remarkable. Please visit Pakistan to rid yourself of the hatred.

@Yet another Indian sri1 I also wanted to look at the different 'aspects' that you talk about: 1. Space - the Indian space agency has wonderful plans but they are not really leading. NASA and European space agency are far ahead in terms of actually achieving objectives. 2. Cricket - ODI champions: Australia; T20 champions: West Indies. Ranking wise yes India in ODIs but Pakistan in T20s. 3. Culture - With modernization, I see more Indians adopting Western culture. I don't see people in the rest of the world wearing dhotis and sarees and eating oily spicy food and using Hindi. 4. Diplomacy - there is no world leader when it comes to diplomacy. Every country tries to get what it wants on a global stage. 5. Soft power - that you people good at. Keep your softness.
