Karachi smells really weird right now and people on Twitter think they know why

In the absence of any clarity from the Meteorological Department - why not rely on some fellow Tweeters?
Updated 01 Jun, 2017

It started off with a smell.

For the past few days Karachi residents have taken to social media to complain about a strange smell engulfing the city. Today both the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency and the the Pakistan Meteorological Department (MET) admitted they had no idea what could be causing the foul stench.

Which means Karachi's residents naturally turned to... Twitter for answers.

This guy says he knows. Better duck into your bunker!

Some think deodorant might solve the problem

Some people thought the threat was... homegrown

Some resorted to conspiracy theories

Some people got a little morbid

And then there's this guy, who spends wayyy too much time on social media

So that totally makes things clearer... right?

I think reason can be burning shredded tyres in bulk quantity to generate electricity for industrial purpose somewhere near by area.

The EPA does not know what the smell is about? I am very disappointed. They should check the air at various points of the city with the air quality meter. If the EPA does not have the air quality meters, then it is pitty. This is so simple to let people know what is in the city air.

When there is no management for cleaning city for months and years, foul smell is bound to come. If the condition of cleaning remains like this I am afraid of plague.

Seems like smell of underground sewage due to extreme heat and high humidity. There are no facilities in the city for the treatment of sewage due to which choked sewers are likely the cause of this smell.

Pollution, and a lot of it, will smell, foul smell can be sewerage / burning of garbage issue and winds are flowing inwards, so the smell lingers. I just checked NASA's feed and Carbon dioxide level around Karachi at this moment is 415ppm which is quite high and Carbon Monoxide levels are 109ppb, healthy level is 70 and under.

It must be industrial: either a factories or cargo (ships) chemical tank or some other industrial activity. The government should have taken it seriously.
