Disney princesses, tablecloths and other bizarre things we spotted at the Hum Style Awards red carpet
Last night's Hum Style Awards in Karachi were a pleasant surprise: despite road blockages a bevy of stars made it out, dressed to the nines.
With well-rehearsed dances choreagraphed by Nida Butt stealing the show, we forgot all about the fashion we saw on the red carpet... nahhh, just kidding. We never take our eyes off your style game!
Here's our own take on who won the style war last night, and who didn't.
Best Disney-inspired gown: Sajal Aly
A lot of little girls like to impersonate their favourite movie characters but usually this hobby fades away as we grow into our teen years.
However, we've noticed that adult Pakistani women are having a hard time letting go and aren't afraid to channel their inner Disney princess when the occasion calls for a nice, big royal gown.
Although this can go horribly wrong (see: Sunita Marshall's Belle/Big Bird inspired yellow dress), Sajal Aly looked cute as a button in her all white Nomi Ansari number. Just wish she'd opted for a clutch that was less blah.
Best hot off the runway look: Fayezah Ansari
Every time you see a model strutting down the ramp, you inherently wonder what that outfit would look like rooted in practical life. Well, the Hum Style Awards are hardly "real life" but hey, it's stll a different perspective!
We're digging this HSY onesie on Fayezah Ansari and even though we weren't fond of the jacket when we spotted it on the runway, Ansari's carrying it in a way that doesn't make it look like complete roadkill so more power to her.
Coupled with that easy breezy updo and a vampy lip, this one's a winner in our books!
Most tablecloth: Minal Khan
Minal Khan's FnkAsia two piece looks like the tablecloth that grandma puts under that clear plastic cover. Everything from the slicked back bun that's giving her an unnecessary face lift to that 70s clutch is wrong here.
This is a valuable lesson in how NOT to do monochrome and that when you have an award show to attend, you should probably plan ahead and not make any last minute wardrobe decisions.
Most last year: Ayesha Omar AND Anoushey Ashraf
We've got some bff offenders in the house!
If it's Shehla Chatoor (or Tena Durrani), you can bet Ayesha Omar will be wearing it. While the outfit on it's own is good, it definitely felt dated — like it's from Chatoor's older collection and like something she's already worn on the red carpet... multiple times.
Plus, the Karachi Se Lahore actress is so tiny, we really wish she'd wear something more fitted to show off that killer physique.
Same goes for Ashraf, who wore a powder blue ensemble, also by Shehla. She looked nice and all, like she always does but it was nothing to write home about. All in all, we gotta say we were disappointed. We know these girls can do better!
Best monochrome: Rabia Butt
Like many others, this supermodel was feeling the monochrome madness this year.
Though the dress reminded us a lot of the one Amo B wore to the Lux Style Awards, also by Sana Safinaz, we have no complaints because she's owning the polished look but also giving it more character with a clunky watch and bedazzled choker.
Most dapper: Ali Kazmi
We have to hand this one to him; the Dobara Phir Se actor is wearing a lean, close-cut indigo suit by Munib Nawaz and damn, he looks fine!
Best jumpsuit: Huma Khan
We absolutely adored this shimmery jumpsuit by Maheen Karim on Huma Khan. Not a shocker that Ehtesham Ansari styled her; she hits all the right notes with understated accessories, a classic Bottega clutch and a high ponytail.
That thin velvet belt cinched at the waist adds a little oomph and shape to this otherwise baggy outfit, not to mention highlights that Khan's been hitting up the gym!
Best beauty look: Mawra Hocane
Mawra is a firm believer in the less is more mantra so it was nice to see her sport a fire engine red pout; it's been a while!
The sleek middle parting, false lashes and radiant skin won us over, even if we were a little on the fence about her golden Muse ensemble.
Worst fusion: Aamina Shiekh
What a pretty actress...what a tragic fashion choice.
Where do we even begin? The fact they were going for a chic woven look on that sleeve which ended up looking like banarsi kapra or this particular shade of green? It's not 14th August yet! The gown doesn't fit well and gosh, that necklace. It screams bridal rather than award show.
This is tricky territory; mixing traditional aesthetics with modern, on-trend cuts and styles is rarely done right. Too bad Aamina's risk didn't make the cut.
Worst facial hair: Humayun Saeed
The Bajirao/Ramleela stache trend is over and done but apparently, the Bin Roye leading man didn't get the memo. Shame he ruined that nice(ish) plaid suit.
