DC Comics' fictional character, Wonder Woman aka Diana Prince, will now be honoured with the title of UN Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls, announced The United Nations.

The UN is enlisting the super-powers of the Themiscyran Princess for a new campaign to empower women and girls.

The comic and television series heroine will be officially designated as the UN honorary ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls during a ceremony attended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and "surprise guests" at the UN headquarters in New York on October 21.

The event will mark the launch of the UN's global campaign supporting Sustainable Development Goal #5, which aims to "achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls," on the occasion of "Wonder Woman’s" 75th anniversary.

“Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world,” says the UN. “Providing women and girls with equal access to education, healthcare, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes will fuel sustainable economies and benefit societies and humanity at large.”

DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson will attend along with "surprise guests" -- possibly actress Lynda Carter who portrayed Wonder Woman in the hit TV series in the 1970s.

The ceremony will launch a year-long campaign on gender equality and women's empowerment, which is one of the UN's new global goals for the next 15 years.

Wonder Woman was first created in October 1914 when female superheroes were rare, the character was a means to test the appeal of its character. It soon became a hit among young girls who were inspired by the fictional character and her boldness.
