Sharmeen Chinoy's new short film is an ode to local artisans of Peshawar and Afghan refugees

The Emmy and Oscar award-winning filmmaker beautifully captures the process of transforming hard stone into works of art
09 Sep, 2016

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy's films always seem to tell stories that the world needs to know...and she's doing what she does best with her new short, titled Lél.

The film is about the artistic collective Lél, that curates works in natural stone - semiprecious & marble, proudly handcrafted by local artisans and Afghan refugees in Peshawar, Pakistan.

Following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, thousands of artisans possessing skills of exceptional artistic and historic value, poured into Peshawar to escape conditions of war. Over two decades later Peshawar, one of the oldest surviving cities in Asia, is itself conflict-ridden.

Lél, the brainchild of mother-daughter duo, Farhana Asad and Meherunissa Asad, regards these artisans as living treasures, nurturing their knowledge of traditional techniques passed down to them through the ages and introducing their skills to a new generation of art connoisseurs.

Sharmeen is great documentarian that sends powerful messages globally. It is high time she makes a documentary on our unmarried women awaiting suitable matches till they are discarded also to explore reasons thereto.

One note to Miss Shirmeen is that kindly visit the old houses of Potohar ( North Punjab ), Azad Kashmir and even of Central Punjab. All have this type of art. This art is not only common in Upper North but in other part of Pakistan as well. Also our local artisans did it . Giving credit to one form of art to one specific region without any research in other parts of the country is ignorance and nothing else. This art is not an exclusive form of art of one region or one ethnicity only. Many part of Pakistan have this art for many centuries.

@Taimoor Khan So you want her hide all the negative aspects of our society(and there are many). If you don't accept that you have problems, how are you going to fix them?

@Taimoor Khan She's a filmmaker. She should show what she feels is important and what the people need to know about Pakistan, not a sanitized version of what we want the world to know about Pakistan.
