#ReformMatricBoard campaign to create environment for change: Shehzad Roy

The singer-cum-activist says the video aims to encourage independent thinking and reasoned judgment.

Singer-cum-activist Shehzad Roy, who is in news these days for his recent #ReformMatricBoard video, explained the cause behind the viral video in a candid conversation with DawnNews on Monday.

Roy who appeared in DawnNews' talk show News Eye on Monday night, maintained that the video is aimed at creating an environment which accepts change of teaching methods in all the 33 matric boards operating across Pakistan — as the culture of critical thinking starts at school.

"It has nothing to do with curriculum or syllabus, now I wish to give you an example that students are asked about Greenhouse Effect in exams and they write the standard answer which they memorised through rote learning but we want them to change the question slightly and ask the student about the causes of the effect, this will increase reasoned learning," Roy told the host Mehar Bokhari.

Responding to criticism, he clarified that the video is not making monsters out of teachers or parents but is against all the people and professionals who are in any way extremists.

The #ReformMatricBoard video went viral since it was uploaded.

"There are instances where teachers have beaten children to death and we don't want even parents to take extreme measures against their children's wishes or queries," said Shehzad Roy.

Aided by young instrumentalists, Roy also entertained the audience with his live performance.

Super refreshing to see someone talking beyond the hackneyed political topics. It is decades since educational policy was discussed by the public.

Can't agree more. There should also be more focus on maths with in depth focus on thinking behind operations and partitioning. Similarly with languages(Urdu and/or English) , more focus should be on reading and comprehension, with wider range of books by various authors enforced by the schools to be read by pupils instead of following just a single text book. Unfortunately this requires a will and bigger share of budget it invest in teacher trainings, reading materials, enhancing school libraries by government agencies which is not there. The world around us has moved so far ahead. Our kids are so talented and motivated that given proper guidance they can excel beyond those from developed economies.

What is his own qualification? Does he really understand what are the problems in Pakistan's educational system? or is he trying to do an adventure without any knowledge and experience. It will be appreciated if someone can write some details about his background or qualification!

Zabardast! As a father of 5 children I entirely agree with Shahzad. Critical thinking and power of reasoning is to be encouraged at every stage of child's life to make them good citizens and good human beings.

I agree with Shehzad Roy. Intellectual curiosity is quashed at a very young age in Pakistan. That's why we have a culture that lacks scientific curiosity, and moral courage. We have created a culture of sheepish blind following.

Shehzad Roy, I really admire you for your position about education system in Pakistan. It needs a big change. We have created rattoo totaas for generations. We need to produce real intellectuals who can master STEM fields and take the nation to next level

You were raised in a rich family as you had ample money and time to develop music. Isn't it time for you to pay back to nation? Why asking government to do something, be proactive and start some project even on a small scale to change our youngs thinking process.

@Amin Syed, do the qualifications of Shehzad Roy matter? Why do we always want to shoot the messenger and never look at the message?

@Amin Syed and here comes our generation old mindset, quick to question the credentials of someone raising a valid point rather than accepting that the system is full of faults and doesn't promote education only promote ratafication as know in slang. I remember trying to memorize a 7 page answer for my Physics paper because it was written by a known professor and examiners at the board give marks based on that. rather than checking the core concept and rational of the answer. people are moving to objective based examination and reasoning based MCQ's whereas we pakistanis are stuck with old rote learning method where we prefer 10 page long answers

Those who are criticizing Shehzad Roy, they must know he is a graduated. He is running Zindagi trust which educates poor children and pay money for it. He recently successfully restored APWA college in Karachi. Haters get some life and appreciate the good in people. He has done far more than any 1 of haters has done for this country.
