In an unfortunate turn of events, Anurag Kashyap's film Udta Punjab was leaked online days before its official release, 17th June. That's when the producer decided to reach out to his fans.

He took to Facebook, pleading cinema-goers to refrain from downloading his film online before it hit cinemas and instead wait for the film's release.

Kashyap tried his best to bring to light the situation at hand and wrote, "This time it's a different fight, it's a fight against censorship and if you are that audience that always downloads a film, then I won't ask you to not do that , please do, but wait till Saturday which is the day you would normally download a film."

"So all downloaders of Udta Punjab, I urge, wait till Saturday till you decide to not pay for the film, don't download and share, curb the curiosity for two more days," he concluded.

Shahid and Alia also took to Twitter urging his fans to watch their film in cinemas.

According to NDTV, Phantom Films claim that the leaked version was the copy submitted to the censor board which was available on numerous torrent website.

Following the incident, Bollywood also asked fans not to download the film online illegally.

Udta Punjab is set to hit theatres today.

Try better security features next time so that it doesn't get pirated. I personally like free stuff. Why should I pay more so that you get even richer.

@anz, I partly agree with you on this. I cannot find a reason why I waste 200 bucks on a stupid movies like Fan, Dabang and so on. But once a while there come good movie that try to give a message - like this one. I know Udta Punjab is there on the net. But won't download it. It is my way of recognition given to the director and the cast for choosing a good subject. It's my personal opinion, and I don't expect everyone to agree with me.

Why don't you "stars" and "celebrities" agree to much lesser salary and help movie tickets affordable for viewers? You guys are there for money and not for "art" or whatever. Now, if it is available for free, we will watch it. What if the movie turned out to be real garbage for the Rs.500 per ticket we spent.

First of all keep prices of movie tickets reasonable. First day first show price of Chennai express was INR 2000, movie was below average. Stop stealing our money, we won't download online then.
